Michigan Women's Hoops

Has KBA brought in a number of good recruits the past 4 years?

I don’t follow womens basketball recruiting but if they had their two best classes ever as people are suggesting idgaf if they’re from Michigan or not. It literally does not matter

Also have to remember that womens bball isn’t scouted as heavily as men. So the rankings are naturally less reliable.

UConn, South Carolina, Stanford and Louisville isn’t exactly screaming parity. Sure there are early upsets but these 4 are basically preseason top 4-5 teams. The gap between the elite and the next tier remains huge in women’s basketball. At least the talent distribution has evened out a little bit more than several years ago when the top recruits basically just go to either UConn or Tennessee.

For Men’s basketball, there’s more parity.

This years freshmen:

#23 Phelia (from Ohio)
#86 Taylor Gibson (from Maryland)
#38 Ari Wiggins (from Indiana)
NR Jordan Hobbs (from Ohio)

Sophomores:

#77 Whitney Sollum (from Michigan!!)
NR Elise Stuck, but nominated to the McDonalds game? (Also Michigan
#30 Cameron Williams (from Illinois)

incoming class:

#48 Alyssa Crockett (Indiana)
#99 Kate Clark (Indiana)
And then Chyra Evans, an Aussie so obviously not ranked

That’s pretty good.

Our best team ever had 2 players from in-state. None played meaningful minutes.

In-state recruits
#18 Morsha Wiggins (UNC)
#23 Damiya Hagemann (MSU)
#44 Breanne Salenbein (Zags)
#46 Kaybriana Hallman (Xavier)
#50 Jillian Brown (NW)
#95 Ally Van Timmerman (BC)

Yes, they did well to get Phelia and Wiggins but when KBA has struck out on several top 50 in-state recruits. That’s not good

2022:

#15 Ruby Whitehorn (Clemson)
#68 Lexus Bargesser (Indiana)
#80 Abbey Kimball (MSU)
#81 Mya Petticord (A&M)
#95 Madisen Wardell (DePaul)

The two players from instate only had one top 100 recruit and an unranked recruit. My biggest gripe is instate in '21 and '22 were loaded with top 100 talent and Michigan did not get one at all. There were several who would’ve been the highest ranked recruit in Michigan’s history like Wiggins, Whitehorn, Hagemann, etc. Michigan recruiting has been better lately but it could be better with elite in-state talents.

I do grin at the idea that it’s a failure that we allowed #68 to go to Indiana but not a credit we got the #42 player….from Indiana

And in 2021, it was a three person class, you listed six “misses”. And two of the three we got (from out of state) are ranked similarly to the top two from instate. :man_shrugging:

Absolutely. But the women used to be almost all chalk. Now, as you said, there are 4-6 contenders instead of two. Plus down the seed lines there were some actual upsets.

Michigan isn’t elite yet, and they still managed to hang with a 1 seed.

I’m sorry, it’s just WILD to me we are having serious questions about this staff’s recruiting the night we lose in the Elite effing Eight.

Why we love college sports.

I may be old, the world may have passed me by, but I still believe this is what college athletics is about. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” Thank you Danielle. You’ve touched my heart and eloquently stated what my heart believes.:blue_heart::heart:

I’ve been questioning last year as well. It’s not just knee jerk reaction.

How long before

hangs in the rafters at Crisler Center?

GOSH, it should be soon! She has done more than any woman, or MAN, has done in the history of Michigan Basketball. Just as Cazzie’s name is inextricably linked to the beginning of greatness in Michigan Men’s Basketball and “built the arena” called CRISLER, Naz has put our women’s program on her back, and, along with her wonderful and talented teammates, she has ushered Michigan Women’s Basketball into the arena of being Elite! Get that jersey in the rafters! :blue_heart:

I hope that fifty or sixty years from now, and certainly sooner than that, too, older men and women who are just little girls and little boys now, will say, as I have been able to say about Cazzie nearly sixty years after he arrived in Ann Arbor, “Naz Hillmon is the player who made me fall in love with Michigan (Women’s) Basketball!” What a special young lady and great player she is! :blue_heart:

Considering I made fun of Iowa and Illinois for their jersey retirements this year I hope they wait a couple years.

Has any Michigan player played in the WNBA? Or gotten drafted?

Yes. I understand that there have been six Michigan women drafted by the NBA, but I don’t know if that includes, for instance, Kysre Gondrezick who transferred from Michigan and graduated from WVU. The last young woman with Michigan after her name as a draftee was Taibitha Pool who was drafted number ten in the second round by the NY Liberty in 2005.

Among the many accolades she holds, Naz is the first All American in Women’s Basketball history and holds scoring records for scoring and rebounding. She is the only player, man or woman, to score over 1000 points (2150) AND grab over 1000 rebounds (1042).

Edit: Michigan Women’s Basketball in it’s nearly 50-year history had a W/L record of 584-686 pre-Naz Hillmon. The W/L record in Naz’s four years is 84-36. Michigan had only been to seven NCAA Tournaments during the many years pre-Naz, and never advancing beyond the second round. In Naz’s four years at Michigan the team went to three NCAA Tournaments (2019-20 was cancelled but UM would have certainly been invited!) playing in their first Sweet Sixteen and their first Elite Eight! KBA has been a great coach during that time, despite the criticism by some on the message board, but NAZ IS ICONIC! Get her 00 up in the rafters!
