The ladies are steamrolling teams.
They’re going to get South Carolina again
Wait, the women’s bracket for the Fort Myers’ Tipoff is super confusing to me…can we play SC?
I don’t think the Shell Division and Island Division play each other. Women will play Belmont, then either Va Tech or Davidson. Men’s team plays Va Tech then either Xavier or South Carolina.
I wasn’t clear, because on the men’s side the “other division” is the losing team from the “campus games”, so it technically is still one bracket. The women’s tournament didn’t have the campus games, so the two are unconnected? There are two champions?
Nope. The bracket is fixed. Virginia Tech lost to Jacksonville and still plays Michigan.
oh you’re right…so there ARE “two tournaments” basically. Weird!
Pretty common at this point. No one does the “campus games actually count” thing anymore.
Teams in the lower divisions get a buy game and two neutral games.
The women’s one looks like it’s actually just fixed matchups in one tournament and the UM side is a real bracket.
Kentucky or Kansas ruined this some years ago right? some Belmont loss that messed up the MTE?
Kentucky lost to Gardner Webb was a big one.
The new AP poll is out and we’re still not ranked. However, we’ve moved up to the top of the Others Receiving Votes part.
There are 8 B1G teams in the Top 25, then us, and Michigan State right behind. Indiana and Minnesota also got votes. I am guessing that this is the most stacked the B1G has ever been for women’s basketball.
Interesting that MSU is also unranked. HHS has them as the #13 team in the country.
Edit for context: Michigan is currently #24 in the HHS rankings.
Adding USC and UCLA didn’t hurt.
It’s true, and Oregon is 6-0 and ranked 21st.
Interestingly, Oregon is ranked 58th on HHS, so their AP ranking is way ahead of that.
What is HHS?
For context, here are the HHS ratings for the ranked B1G teams plus those just outside the rankings.
Team | AP Rank | HHS Rank | Differential | Torvik Rank |
---|---|---|---|---|
UCLA | 1 | 4 | +3 | 5 |
USC | 6 | 11 | +5 | 7 |
Maryland | 10 | 17 | +7 | 13 |
Ohio State | 11 | 7 | -4 | 11 |
Illinois | 19 | 25 | +6 | 26 |
Oregon | 21 | 65 | +44 | 27 |
Iowa | 22 | 5 | -17 | 18 |
Nebraska | 25 | 31 | +6 | 36 |
Michigan | 26 | 23 | -3 | 35 |
Michigan State | 27 | 9 | -18 | 25 |
Indiana | 31 | 26 | -5 | 31 |
Penn State | NR | 34 | 38 | |
Minnesota | 36 | 37 | +1 | 30 |
According to HHS, the AP is way undervaluing Iowa and MSU, way overvaluing Oregon, and is generally overvaluing many of its B1G teams by ~6 spots.
I’m sure a lot of this is early season noise that will sort itself out over time, but in the past years I’ve found HHS to be just as helpful as KenPom.
Editing to add Torvik rankings (thanks @kturnup). They seem to align more closely with the AP ranks.
Bart Torvik has women’s rankings now as well. Would be interesting to compare to HHS
