Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

Brutal no call to a Hauser 3. Shades of their last game.

They’re gonna go up. Duke right now doesn’t look like a good team but it’s still a ā€œroadā€ win vs Duke, and no voters will pay attention to this game

Their post defense is god awful. We actually match up with them pretty well. They don’t have a PG that will make Smith/Brooks pay. They don’t have a C that is a high-usage scorer. All their best players matchup with our gluttony of wings.

Dickinson vs. any of their posts might be the biggest matchup in that game.

I don’t know. I could see Rocket tearing us up. And Henry and Brown getting down hill. We match up well with Hauser as long as he’s not playing the 5. But it is a funny reversal of what we’d come to expect out of this game

Yeah, from what I remember Davis got some pretty good looks against MSU in the post last year too

If Smith is matched up against Watts I agree. If we put Brooks, Brown or Franz on him, and one of the other ones on Henry that would be our best bet. Then put Livers on Hauser and try to hid Smith on Loyer/Langford when they’re in (they’ve hit a combined 3 2 pointers this season) and maybe match up those minutes.

If we defend like we did to start the game today and we’ve seen in chunks of this season it won’t matter, but if we can get closer to how we played the rest of today by February then we could have some success.

It’s definitely a team that I think we’d fair a lot better with Smith on the bench. At least defensively. Brooks/Brown/Wagner/Livers could match up well with them defensively. Smith can play when loyer is in.

I know Langford hasn’t been good but I can’t imagine he wouldn’t bully Smith

Yeah I’m with you. I probably agree about Langford (although he hasn’t been able to bully Detroit or WMU), he’s probably the best chance for Smith of MSU’s starters. But that should be a Smith bench game.

Yes, but that was only because MSU didn’t game plan for him.

We’re not putting our best ball handler/passer/penetrator on the bench.

Can’t help but marvel at MSU’s ball movement. 26 AST on 29 FG. Year after year their assist rate is the elite of elite.

There’s the Hauser perimeter threat I expected. You truly can’t leave him

IMO he makes them the deadliest team in the B1G. We’ve already seen that Wisconsin can be snookered on a given night. Cracking MSU will be far more difficult.

He’s more athletic than I gave him credit for.

Penn state easily handling Seton Hall so far. They look like a solid team

Seton Hall also might not be very good but PSU seems better than expected.

Also if I’m Penn State and only up 11 in that game… I’d be a bit nervous.

Penn State’s 8/15 on 3 pointers at the half stands out to me. Will be interesting to see if they can stay that hot in the 2nd half. Hope they use up all the heat before they hit Ann Arbor next week!

Dylan, do you plan on sending out a Big 10 newsletter again this year? It’d be nice to hear some analysis of out of conference for the league, in addition to whatever is on the pod next week.

Not sure I have the bandwidth to get the whole newsletter going. Much more likely that I’ll do some Big Ten-focused posts here.
