“C’mon, magic 8-ball! Daddy needs a hot take!”
It’s kind of amusing (but also illustrative) that right now in this thread I’m slagging hot takes whereas ten seconds ago in another thread I questioned the quality of the response to that kind of nonsense – data-driven methodologies. Two conclusions:
-
Fans are fickle morons
-
Fans are fickle morons in a way that shows how informed takes are the product of a wise blend of quantitative and qualitative analysis
Guess we’ll see some of the Purdue stuff play out tonight. I got them over Maryland but I think this one could get interesting.
Alright since Michigan doesn’t have much going on, I’ve directed thoughts to MSU, and what they’ll look like next year. I did a quick minutes estimate for them next year:
PG | SG | SF | PF | C | |||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Hoggard | 25 | Watts | 30 | Henry | 30 | Hauser | 20 | Sissoko | 20 | ||
Akins | 15 | Akins | 10 | Christie | 10 | Hall | 20 | Hauser | 10 | ||
Bingham/Boayke/Marble/Kithier?? | 10 |
So that doesn’t even include Pierre Brooks, or Gabe Brown, or Foster Loyer, and only has 10 minutes for their blue chip stud Christie. And leaves 10 minutes to be divided by 4 guys at C. I don’t see how MSU doesn’t have at least 3 people leave the program. I think Henry or Watts might pull a Nick Ward and just leave for the NBA even without great prospects. I just looked it up and Javon Bess and Marvin Clark (who?) are the last MSU transfers, both after the 2016 season.
Yeah, I love Christie’s game and maturity - i think he will be in line for more than 10 minutes per game next year. Your starting lineup for next year has the same issue as this year - they cant hardly shoot. Either Gabe Brown figures it out again or, IMO the more likely option, Christie plays at least 20 minutes
I could see Henry putting his name in the draft process and then never pulling out. Like you said MSU doesn’t have a lot of outgoing transfers but Watts seems like a prime candidate with his yo-yo deployment. That would be two…maybe Marble goes back to Texas?
Dylan has often said that a player who submits his name one year is gone the next year. Highly unlikely they stay a second year after testing the waters.
Yeah you can probably take the 10 Akins SG minutes and give them to Christie.
25 minutes for AJ Hoggard?
who else is playing starter minutes at the 1? Akins? Watts tries again?
Personally I don’t think there’s anyway Henry comes back. I could be very wrong here (I usually am), but I don’t really see much upside for him returning. He’s had the same player profile since his freshman year, a great defender and mediocre to bad offensive player (better shot creator now but regressed as a shooter/scorer). He’s still getting put at the end of the 2nd in current mocks, so he might as well take advantage of what little draft standing he currently has left. He could improve his stock through pre-draft workouts, and coming back for a senior year could be a death knell if he still is just the same player. Also for some reason I thought he declared for the draft after his freshman year as well, meaning if he went through the process again this year it’d be his third time and he wouldn’t be able to come back. But I don’t think I’m right there.
Watts also seems like an obvious transfer candidate to me if he were playing at any school but MSU. Highly touted recruit who clearly has talent but it isn’t working at MSU. Some other lower tier P6 school would love to have him, and he could have success in the right situation (AKA a team with a bonafide PG and some shooters). Not sure it’ll happen though.
I do think we see a couple transfers between the current junior class and logjam of big men MSU has, but I don’t feel like guessing at who those end up being.
I think Watts should team up with Weems at DePaul
Watts, Akins, a transfer… I just am not sure AJ Hoggard has shown anything to make me think he’s a starter next year.
I do think Akins is Izzo’s next elite guard but not sure he can run the offense by himself on day 1.
Not saying it’s a good idea but do we expect Izzo to start Akins there? Or start Watts there again? Not sure
Can give Christie starter level minutes by dropping Hoggard to 15 minutes. Probably makes them a much better team than I proposed. Still leaves all the same transfer candidates though.
Inject the Christie/Akins minutes into my veins!!! I prefer my ideal version of next year’s MSU rotation to include 2-time captain senior Foster Loyer starting over Akins and 4-time captain 6th year senior Josh Langford starting over Christie, but to each their own

11:00 a.m. local time game at the Troll Center, 9:00 p.m. tip for Rutgers and a game on CBS Sports Network. I hate all of this.
Edit: I’m dumb. It’s a noon tip at Wisconsin. Reading is hard.
