Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

who is projected at the bottom of the B1G next year? Minnetonka with no Daniel Carr? PSU with no coach? Indiana with no TJD?

Ha ha ha ha ha

Sometimes the eye test doesn’t lie, fellas

I was so foolishly certain that guy was trolling us :man_facepalming:

Is it assumed that Cockburn leaves after this year? If so, what do we think of an Illinois lineup consisting of

Andre Curbelo
Adam Miller
Jacob Grandison
Coleman Hawkins
Giorgi Bezhanishvili

I could see that team being sneaky bad (or not even sneaky, to be honest) and very reliant on a huge leap from Miller or Curbelo developing some kind of jump shot to do well. They only have one 2021 commit, a fringe top 100 wing.

Real answer is we’ll have no idea until well into the off-season until who see who transfers out and in of each school. If you go back a year projections, of our current team included Isaiah Todd, Josh Christopher, and probably DDJ and Castelton as well. None of us even knew who Mike Smith or Chaundee Brown were. This is especially true next year when seniors can all come back if they want too.

That being said, based on what we know about teams now, there are obvious contenders. NW will basically have the same team, and if a team of sophomores and juniors isn’t any good, why would a team of the same players as juniors and seniors be much better?

Nebraska is the clear worst team right now. But they have some decent talent and are bringing in more next year, so maybe that elevates them out of the basement, but maybe not.

There are cases to be made for a bunch of other teams like the ones you mentioned as well. But I’d say Wisconsin could be in for a huge drop. They go 8 deep right now and 6 of those guys are seniors. Once again this is with the caveat of we don’t know if any seniors will be back/who will transfer in and out. But if we assume we can only use the current roster/committed recruits as is, Wisconsin looks like they’ll be pretty terrible next year.

But do we have any reason to believe that the whole Wisconsin roster won’t come back as 26-year-olds? Are Trice and Davison in a hurry to sign contracts in Lithuania?

interesting candidate. that starting five looks okay on paper

What is the best case for UM returning to action ? Sunday 2/7 ?

To play an actual game? Thursday, 2/11 against Illinois.

To return to practice? Sunday, 2/7 or Monday, 2/8

I’m also looking at our schedule for the potential dates to reschedule any of the four cancelled games.

It looks like playing @PSU on Feb 16th would be the only possible time to reschedule any of the four games until the next bye week from Feb 22-26.

If the intention is to wait until that bye week and still reschedule all 4 games, then we’d be playing 8 games in 14 days to close out the season from Feb 21-Mar 7. Doesn’t seem particularly realistic.

I really hope they don’t go overboard trying to reschedule all of these games. I don’t want the team to be burned out going into the tournament, or worse, increase the risk of an actual positive test on the team creating another shutdown. Maybe reschedule 1 or 2 of those games where they make sense within reason.

So I did this math just because I was curious:

As you may know, MSU is #1 in AST/FGM with a gaudy 69% that’s a couple points ahead of 2nd place. If you take out the EMU, WMU, and Oakland games where they primarily faced crappy zones, it drops to around 62%. Which is still high, but not #1.

The MSU scorekeeper is super generous with counting assists

Home/Road splits would be interesting on this.

I’d be curious to see B1G only numbers so as to remove cupcake games like Oakland and EMU this year. Looks like it’s legit though since comparing to Michigan which isn’t that consistent

They’ve only played 3 home games in Big Ten play but similar trend:

It’s gruesome. Just have to try to survive the day and get to tomorrow’s bountiful promise, which is already tingling my root chakra and generating the latent kundalini.

Maybe they reassigned that old scorekeeper who gave them extra seconds in football many years ago to be the official basketball scorekeeper. It is an interesting phenomenon we’re seeing - makes you wonder if there are other stats impacted in a similar way. Assists are probably the most subjective and hard to track stat in basketball so maybe not…
