Recruiting Notes

It hasn’t been hard for Simpson to play this year?

For the record, Greg Elliott is better than Xavier Simpson at everything right now.

For the record, I think Greg Elliott would have more of an impact on next year’s Michigan team than Jordan Poole. I also think Greg Elliott has more upside as a 2 way player in relation to Jordan Poole.

I think you might be falling victim to what I call 'Dylan syndrome" where you absolutely fail to account for defense.

See my note above, I think Greg could play 10-15 minutes a game if he adds 10-15 pounds, which is nice time for a freshman, and more than X.

We will need Poole’s offense.

I just disagree with what we need more. We have the 20th best offense in the country per Kenpom…and guess what, we’re a pretty bad team right now. I’d say we need Greg Elliott’s defense more, and I think you may be underestimating him offensively.

Again, I can totally see where you might not be impressed with Greg based on film because he doesn’t do anything to stand out (much like Sumner), but he produces in a way that I think will translate to college. Guess we’ll have to revisit.

This goes back to the thread yesterday. LOL at the ‘Dylan syndrome’ … not sure how I’m not accounting for defense?

Say you have: Simpson, Matthews & Wilson in 3 of the 4 perimeter spots. Do you want an offensive specialist or a defensive specialist in the last spot?

I’m not necessarily as high on Poole as others, mostly just looking at the roster breakdown. For example, given MAAR’s inability to shoot the three I would worry about him in that last spot.

(Also, I had him at 12-of-40 from three, D1Circuit has 13-of-38, splitting hairs there. He’s a guy who takes 3 out of 4 shots inside the arc in HS.)

Are you asking me, or placing me in the shoes of JB? If its me I want Greg over JP all day as a freshman, because I know he’s going to go 100% every single play. JB is another story

I absolutely love Jordan Poole, but having seen him live over the spring/summer, I can see why he’s ranked in the 75-100 range rather than the top 50 type most here think he is.

I don’t think JP is an instant impact type as much as I like the kid personally. Handle just isn’t tight enough to really be a PnR threat, and his passing is risky to be diplomatic about it (I’m sure you know this), and he’s going to struggle defensively.

That is not fair at all to say. I know you have watched Greg a lot but Xavier played very well in high school and has not translated over as quick as we expected. Who is to say Greg will translate immediately.

I’ll share this, Jordan texted me about a week and half ago, and he’s very confident that he’s starting as a freshman (if you know JP this doesn’t surprise you at all). I flat out told him that offensively he could definitely fulfill a catch and shoot role, but that he needs to do a lot of work on his body because he’s simply not strong enough or agile enough to defend in the B10 yet. He agreed and said “that’s what I’m working on, its gonna be a drastic change from now to then”

No way possible I can say anything for certain. In retrospect, X was playing a lot of suspect competition in Ohio, at least in his conference. And I don’t think all of X’s struggles are on him per se, because our offense simply isn’t a good fit for what he does well.

I too thought X would be better than he currently is, I was really high on the pickup at the time, and turned out to be wrong as it relates to his impact his freshman year. I knew just how far off he was once I saw him in practice.

I think Greg’s style of play, in conjunction with his effort level, translate better to Michigan. Greg doesn’t need to dominate the ball to be effective.

I could be wrong, I guess we’ll see.

Again, I can totally see why some don’t think Greg is a take. His film is very…basic is the word I would use to describe it. I could definitely be wrong here.

So who dominates the ball in a lineup of X-Elliot-Matthews-Wilson-Wagner?

Have to hope X develops, because its not going to be JP based on a lack of handle and lack of explosion. Matthews may be able to create his own shot, but not for others based on what I’ve seen.

Who is saying he isn’t a take?

I’m saying that Jordan Poole is the better basketball player between the two.

That wasn’t really an answer to my question.

I am not saying Greg is bad. I personally like Greg Elliot based on what I have seen. I feel like he can run point and off guard at the college level.

Just don’t see how you say he’s a better basketball player. Other than shooting, Greg does everything better right now.

Are you simply saying you value shooting more than all other attributes?

I don’t think Greg can play PG as a freshman, but I certainly think he could do it as a sophomore.

Simple answer - nobody. Would have to compensate through defense and transition
