Michigan Players in the NBA

Well, that’s true also. They both currently log a lot of minutes, and when one goes out, the other stays in for ballhandling.

summer league games is not about winning but evaluating players. I would assume that what Kobe did in that stretch was more or less encouraged by the coach.

Kobe is struggling to finish against length/physicality but the creation to get to those spots looks really good

Believe Juwan was courtside because they showed him talking to Amare Stoudamire during the Pistons game.

Kobe Bufkin! 4th quarter take over and a game-winning basket for Atlanta, with Juwan courtside

Here’s an article about some concerning showings from Summer League and I felt like posting it here because of how many references to topics this board would be interested in. Quick highlights:

  • Kobe Bufkin gets a LOT of negative recap in here, mostly because he was playing so much on the ball and thinking too much while shooting 4-29 from three. They expect him to spend a lot of time in the G-League figuring out how to translate his game to the NBA…but are overall still optimistic long term.
  • Colin Castleton gets a brief positive mention and they think he has a shot of making the roster.
  • Jalen Hood-Shifino gets a similar roasting to Kobe, though in this case because his desire to take tough twos definitely didn’t translate.
  • Max Christie gets positive notes and came out of no where to have a good SL. They trash his performance last year but were pleasantly surprised this summer. I thought this comment was interesting in the context of MSU player development and how they’re using Akins right now, “For a guy who showed absolutely zero off-the-bounce game at Michigan State and in his rookie year with L.A., it was a pretty shocking turn of events.”
  • The Pistons get some significant negative press here too. Most of it is for the obvious - trying to make something out of Wiseman at the expense of Duren. But Ivey also gets criticized.

Memories of when he started 4-24 last year before the NBA came sniffing around

Dunc’d on on Jett: Made shots well, handle/attacking “intriguing” - a “2 dribble closeout attacker type”. Compared him to Tim Hardaway Jr (they swore it wasn’t the school thing) and Gary Trent Jr. They did note his motor was kind of bad in transition and defense, but good on offense. Said he struggled finishing at the rim.

Houstan: Aggressive shooting the 3, no defensive breakdowns, “under-athletic for this player type”, good size. Questions if he can ever defend enough given athletic limitations to stick as a 37% three point shooter, felt one of those needs to markedly improve.

Bufkin: Played PG, was sort of abused by a G-League vet defensively. His handle didn’t appear dynamic, had a hard time beating guys. Got to the line a solid amount, threw some good passes out of the P&R. They aren’t sure what his end point is (ie, is he a PG or a SG). Shot poorly overall, even at the rim (they remain optimistic about his finishing) - he only shoot 33%.

Probably the wrong thread for this but Kaman is from the state of MI. Imagine rolling to a Gus Macker in Belding and see two 7 footers, former NBA guys. Wild.
