Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

And Potter hits an instant three

Itā€™s just me and my irrational prejudices, but I would much rather see Northwestern and Minnesota flounder year after year than Rutgers and Maryland.

Iā€™m ready to admit Wisconsin is really good but itā€™s still infuriating how friendly of a whistle they get at Kohl. This huge run was spurted by a phantom foul on a Davison three pointer where there was literally no contact whatsoever, followed by Bardo acknowledging ā€œyou never see Wisconsin only attempting six free throws at homeā€.

The year Tubby Smith got fired he had Minnesota as a top 10 rated team in January before they hosted #5 Michigan at home on ESPN. They slid after that but I believe they still made the second round of the tournament. I have no idea what their fanbase was expecting but Tubby was doing a pretty good job with the program. Itā€™s been complete mediocrity under Richard Pitino but they did it to themselves.

Itā€™s absolutely ridiculous that Tubby was fired and Pitino hasnā€™t been.

They had serious conduct issues under Tubby didnā€™t they.

I honestly think that without the pandemic they would have moved on from Pitino last offseason.

Nope. He took over a program that was in bad shape and did things the right way. The recent conduct issues at Minnesota were under Pitino AFAIK.

Honestly I thought Smith Minnesota teams Illinois under Weber/Groce were some of the most consistently disappointing teams Iā€™ve seen in terms of talent vs. performance.

Kinda reminds me of the Jim Caldwell ā€”> Matt Patricia change.

Yeah, itā€™s not that Tubby was amazing. Itā€™s that he was held to a completely different standard.

Man does Minnesota need a coach who can keep top guys in Minnesota. Just an absolutely brutal job by Pitino in that department.

I am not sure of that the year before that he got to the tournament and won a tournament game. He has turned over much of the roster since then. Heā€™s won as many tourney games as Tubby did at Minnesotaā€¦

Thatā€™s correct. They both had incredibly similar seasonā€™s in their 6th years and the difference is Tubby was fired after winning an NCAA tournament game and Pitino was kept around. Tubby never had a losing season with Minnesota and Pitino could be looking at two straight and a third total including his third year where he went 8-23. Pitino also now has new practice facilities and high school basketball is exploding with talent in his backyard. I know itā€™s hard to win at Minnesota, but I just donā€™t see it with Pitinoā€™s teams.

Looks like Pitinoā€™s going into a seventh year while Tubby had six? Makes a straight-up comparison simpler, perhaps. They hired Pitino with one year of coaching experience.

I am on board with Minnesota entering into a Lifetime contract with Richard Pitino. Make the Buy-Out $50M. Both ways.

This is Pitinoā€™s eighth year. I donā€™t know how anyone could forget their magical run to the championship in the 2014 NIT!

Ohio St has a new opponent in the CBS Sports Classic instead of UNC they will be facing UCLA. Then you have UNC/Kentucky playing. This was switched to make up closer to covid 19 testing protocols.

Interesting. UNC was probably the worst matchup for OSU since they have 4 functional big men to OSUā€™s 0 (1 if you count Kyle Young). UCLA got off to a rough start but has been much better as of late so this should be an interesting matchup.
