Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

also on reddit, an Illinois guy who supposedly scooped Barstool et al.:

Nebraska tonight, wiscy saturday. Doubt he plays at all the rest of season. Will be ready by btt

Mask won’t be ready for a day or two, then he has to get used to it, team is traveling to Michigan then osu with limited practice. You’re correct it’s early but my money would be on not playing regular season games.

Yeah he’ll be playing against Michigan at worst. Mask will come in tomorrow. Can sit Sat if he has to but that seems on the table. But no way he doesn’t play tuesday

Sissoko is enough of a talented player without having to play the goon. Unlike Davison. This is where you see the coaching as a reasoning for this type of play. Would be interested in seeing Sissoko’s hard foul on Kofi earlier. And I agree that a foul that arises to the Flagrant 2 level against a star player, made by a bench player, should be reviewed for further disciplinary measures. Like sitting an additional game.

Looks like a deliberate blow to Dosunmu’s face. If intentional–I see reason to believe it was–then there ought to be greater repercussions than ejection. Certainly, you formally investigate?

Silver lining might be that refs are going to be all over Sissoko going forward.

His son, Antonie Davis, is a very good player. He was named to the 1st team All-Horizon team which is his 3rd consecutive seasons that he was 1st team all conference. He is skinny but can shoot it from anywhere. Detroit Mercy has been one of the hottest team in the conference after a slow start to the conference.

My Sparty family upon hearing Dosunmu might miss some time: “Man Michigan gets all the breaks.” Because Illinois had been playing so well with him the last few games?

Just impossible to admit that a 16-1 team ranked 3rd in the country is good.

No call prior to review too. Unreal.

Yeah the officiating in that game was not good. Besides being not good in the “missed some calls” sense, but not good in that the game got waaaaay out of hand.

I would have to imagine given all that has gone on the past few weeks there is an internal push by the B1G to tighten things up. Tonights game will probably see a lot of double bonus and turn into a foul shooting contest.

I hate stuff like that. Did we get a break with Brooks missing a game with a broken nose last year? Livers being in and out of the line up with his various injuries or Franz getting a bad flu and losing like 20 pounds mid-year last year? I feel bad for Ayo, but Illinois has to deal with the hand its dealt just like every other team.

I didn’t see it live but was told there wasn’t a whistle initially because the whistle had already blown prior to the shot. That true?

Those types of breaks are ones every team has to deal with, so there aren’t real breaks. THIS ONE, though, hoo boy, now THAT’S a break. :joy::joy:

They called it out of bounds off msu

Pity there aren’t spectators at the games. It would be fun to institute a tradition of shouting, “Out of bounds, MSU!” every time one of their players crashed into someone.

This is exactly my fear. The play by Sissoko was a flat out dirty play, and it has no place in basketball. WWE, sure. College basketball. Uh, no! So, my concern is, what is to stop him from trying to mug one of our players? Does anyone actually think Izzo will have a talk with him and tell him to play HARD but clean, to play basketball, not to engage in combat? I don’t think that conversation is going to happen, not as badly as Izzo wants to BEAT Michigan!

You think that little of Tom Izzo?? He advocates for tough physical play I don’t think for a moment he advocates for dirty play. I am not a Tom Izzo fan but his teams have never really had “dirty” players. I would also say the idea that he should talk to Sissoko shouldn’t even matter. Sissoko was ejected from the game and he probably knows he screwed up. It would have loomed larger if Ayo hit his FTs and they could have cut it down to 8 or 6 with 4 minutes left.

In general I don’t think any coaches encourage dirty play and very rarely is it documented. What Gerald Henderson did to Tyler Hansbrough a decade or so ago was dirty. That doesn’t mean Coach K is dirty. Brad Davison trips and punches guys that doesn’t make Greg Gard a dirty coach.

May be an unpopular take here but I actually think Illinois fans are being ridiculous with the Sissoko crap. Kofi punched Sissoko in the back at one point and nothing happened. And Ayo never subbed out of the game after the broken nose and stole the ball for a layup down 11 when Rocket Watts was trying to run the clock out and end the game.

Then there’s this…
