Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

I just like to make it clear to everyone, so that there’s no confusion, that I really enjoyed hearing Brad Davison screaming in frustration after drawing his fifth foul.

I’d love to bust Dylan’s chops about the Wisconsin pick in the pre-season but in fairness I think he said there was a chance that last season was a bit unsustainable.

Everytime I watch Wisco, Potter’s a non-factor. He received a preseason 1st team All-Conference vote in BQ’s poll!

Can we start having the discussion of the Big Ten being a bit overrated? One of the conference favs losing at home to Maryland, on the road to Penn St, not even remotely competitive against Michigan. A top 3-4 prediction with MSU and they are swirling the drain at 2-5 and could get worse. Don’t get me wrong the conference is good but some of the warts are starting to show.

I picked them too and I’m happy to be wrong. Just so used to them being a three-making defense-grinding machine.

One of the reasons the Big Ten is good is that Penn State and Maryland are significantly better than bottom half teams in any other league.

So turns out pulling Michigan from the floor for two weeks was all part of a diabolical plan to keep the Wolverines rested while the rest of the conference consumed each other?

Penn State winning would push MSU to 13th place right?

Are we buying that if Penn St and Maryland were in other conferences they would be real good?? I am not ready to go that far. If the Big 10 is being propped up by bottom half teams that doesn’t speak to how good a conference is imo.

I mean basically the entire conference is in the top 40 of the NET. Teams losing to other teams shouldn’t be too surprising.

Also if you’re going to say the B1G is overrated, what conferences have impressed you more? The Big 12 is the obvious answer but Kansas in free fall, WVU just lost at home to Florida, TTU just escaped a mediocre LSU team after losing to WVU.

The Pac-12 is pathetically bad. Same with the ACC. The Big East has Nova and that’s it. And the SEC has an undefeated in conference play Bama, but they couldn’t beat a shorthanded OU today.

Yeah, I mean Penn State blew Virginia Tech off the floor. Va Tech is 6-2 in the ACC. I honestly think they are good enough to be an NCAA Tournament/bubble type team but they got ate up by a ridiculous schedule and then a huge COVID shutdown.

They’ve currently played the toughest schedule in the country. There are games to win left on the schedule though: MSU, Maryland 2x, Nebraska. I think they’ll win a handful more games.

PSU smacked VT who is a ranked ACC team. They also gifted Seton Hall a win and Seton Hall is an upper half Big East team

Agree with this. Feisty team and out of the 4 games to make up, this would be the best one to get lost in the mix. Like noted above, their schedule lightens up so they could be near the bubble near the end. Might help our cause that outside of Nebraska, M and PSU have the most games to make up so they may just run out of time.

I did pick Wisconsin to win the league and said they had the highest floor but not really an elite ceiling. The thing I really missed was how good Michigan was going to be honestly. I still think Wisconsin will finish around 12-13 wins or in that range.

Yes I would say the Big 12 for sure. Obviously it helps their conference you play every team twice is help for them and is really going to hurt the Big 10 imo. Is WVU losing to a top 30 NET team bad??

There are a lot of talking heads that wanted to talk about the murderer’s row that Minnesota had to face earlier. WVU has to do the same thing 6 top 25 teams in 14 days, 2 vs Baylor, 1 vs Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Kansas. Like I said I just believe one of the favs with 5 senior starters defending champs have already lost 4 conference games and had some real bad losses. It isn’t a good look imo.

Ok so even if the Big 12 is better, so what? Big ten is still clearly far and away the second best conference at the very least. ACC, SEC and Pac 12 aren’t even at the table to have a conversation. Big East is down compared to last year

The standings behind Mich starting to thin out Iowa second alone 2 GB in loss column.

Penn St. is 35th in the NET coming in to today. By the same logic how is that bad for Wisconsin? WVU was also at home and Florida doesn’t have their best player (Keyontae Johnson).

The Big 12 is obviously a great conference as well. But they have 3 terrible teams in a 10 team conference. The B1G has 2/14 (depending on how you define MSU). That’s a massive difference

12 wins in the league does not equal a top 10 preseason team in the country though.which is what spurred this whole Iowa or Wisconsin thing. Both were preseason top 10s, for the most part Iowa has played like one, and Wisconsin hasn’t.

Everyone missed that so you’re not alone. Weren’t they picked 9th in the Big Ten on average by the national pundits?
