Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

Resumes matter

The 13th place team in the Big Ten was a 4 pt underdog today to the #14 team in the country. If that’s not the sign of a very strong league I don’t know what it is.

Like I cited the tweet earlier 5-4 in their last 9, what is the best Wisconsin win?? Louisville who had 7-8 players??

I mean, Wisconsin is 11th in KenPom? Pretty close to a top ten team.

Kansas, a preseason top 10 team, are now 1-3 in their past four games, just 3-4 in their last seven. This is the third time this season they’ve lost as a favorite.

Resumes matter.

Has Iowa played like one? Maybe this year because it’s a down year for college basketball and it’s hard to even come up with 10 great teams, but they have 3 Big Ten losses already with still 5 games yet to be played against OSU, MI and Wisconsin. Chances are they will lose a few more before the year is done. Good team, but not sure they are great either

They were 11th prior to the Penn State loss right? I’d guess that will drop. And Iowa’s 4th in kenpom but literally the only commentary on them is how they are clearly worse than Illinois and at some point they’ll fall back down to earth.

Kansas did beat a very good Creighton squad. I am just looking for a real good Wisconsin win and can’t find one.

Yeah, I’m sure they’ll drop a bit but they are top 15 it’s not like they are a top 40 team. That’s all I was saying.

Yes. There is 1 point of difference in kenpom efficiency between Iowa and Michigan. And two of their B1G losses came without Fredrick, a la Michigan without Eli Brooks

Wisconsin beat Minnesota, who was wins over Iowa, SLU and Michigan. Creighton has wins over…UConn twice? Along with losses to Butler, Providence and Marquette? What makes Creighton very good?

I get these things like Ken Pom and Net matter but we can’t talk about how they value Wisconsin and constantly talk about how horrendous Iowa is. Unless we are finally ready to admit Iowa is elite as well.

Your way of evaluating teams seems to just be based on who their best win is against. Right now Michigan’s is a home win over Wisconsin. Not exactly elite if you ignore the score

What’s their best win? Home against Minnesota? I just can’t think of many games where I’ve watched them and thought, wow that’s a great team. Minnesota is the only ranked team they’ve beaten this year and they split the series with them. One win against the KP top 30 and that was a 2 pt win over Rutgers (and let’s be honest, does anyone actually think Rutgers is good?)

Literally reading a thread where kenpom is used to defend a team that just lost with a fully healthy team of 6 seniors at a 5-7 Penn State team, but then two posts later kenpom is ignored to discredit the 4th best team in the system. My brain hurts

I do agree that at this point Iowa is better than most here admit (myself included before the season started). But people can cite ratings like KP or the NET without using them as gospel. The argument doesn’t have to be KP says this team is good so therefore that’s fact. A person might be wrong in saying that (depending on the case), but it’s a fair argument to make.

Iowa is a top 10 team. So are Illinois and Michigan

Who is also still going to lose plenty more Big Ten games. That doesn’t mean they are bad.

Conference teams lose games in conference play. Especially in a really good and deep league. It happens every year and people always overreact.

I’d say you can pick from these, all impressive wins IMO.

13 point win at home against Kenpom #37 UNC

15 point win at home against Kenpom #32 Purdue

2 point win @ Kenpom #29 Rutgers

15 point win at home against Kenpom #31 Minnesota
