Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

Yeah, shouldn’t have just said it’s a pain in the ass. More that I prefer to go in depth on a few things rather than dip the toes on everyone.

Positional rankings could be fun though.

I find sites that have a weekly breakdown of a whole conference or whatever rarely look past the raw efficiency stats. Which is helpful if I missed something I guess, but as someone who can just go to Torvik for free and look at them myself it’s not super enlightening. The Athletic probably comes closest to a worthwhile large scale, many team website. But many of those features don’t dive super deep either. I subscribe there more for the Quinn style beat reporting. But the bubble watch feature there is one of my favorites.

Exactly. Peedi couldn’t make a layup. Beilein made Peedi his personal project in the off season. He was a different player the next season. Udoh’s AAU coach worked on him that entire season to transfer. Udoh was Amaker’s recruit.

Wisconsin @ Rutgers tips in 90. Last chance to get some hot takes in

I know their opponent today was DII but Maryland’s Hakim Hart has strung together a pair of really nice games filling in for Ayala. 11 pts on 4/6 (2/4 3) with 6 AST and 0 TO today.

Rutgers has looked so bad lately that I can’t see them winning.

Agreed, going in the wrong direction plus a defensive matchup that would frustrate them even on their best days.

I generally agree with this but for the Scott Skiles and Steve Smith years. Skiles was must see tv and MSU was exciting team. He averaged 27 a game his senior year and was all the rage. Then Steve Smith era was very good too.

From what I was told by people close to Udoh was that Beilein didn’t really rate Udoh and sort of hinted that he wasn’t going to use him as much as Udoh or his people wanted/needed.

I think it was a combo of Beilein not really believing in Udoh and Udoh’s people wanting a bigger role when Beilein already wasn’t super high on him.

Reuvers is scuffling lately but I also wonder if this has anything to do with Micah Potter’s persistent freakouts

Polzin says it likely has to do with the Ron Harper defensive assignment

Reuvers was really bad against Michigan and Harper does present some similar issues to Isaiah.

Wisconsin’s 2 big lineup was always a mess offensively. Good to see them ditch it.

I also expect they win rather easily tonight. Rutgers will have a tough time scoring on them.

I got RU +3. Only for a little

Color me skeptical on this—not that you were told this (I absolutely believe that you were), but that this was the reason for Udoh’s departure. Udoh played 26 minutes a game in his only season under Beilein. There wasn’t any impediment to him playing more the next year—we started 6’6” Peedi Sims at the 5 after Epke left. From what I have heard from those close to the situation, Beilein was looking forward to making Udoh a bigger part of the offense, and was very disappointed when he left.

From someone who was part of the Amaker era, Epke’s people never wanted him at Michigan. Epke loved Tommy, which is why he chose Michigan. When Tommy was fired, Epke’s guys went to work. In those days, with no portal and limited success as a freshman, the opportunity to move him within the power schools prevented these people from convincing Epke to move before Beilein coached his first year. That didn’t stop them from working on him during the year, and the efforts succeeded at the end of his sophomore year.

That’s my info fwiw.
