Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

I’d take them over Penn State for sure and any given night MSU/Maryland.

PSU is probably one of the 3 worst teams, but they aren’t as bad as their record. Beat Va Tech and VCU and lost on the road to Michigan and Indiana by a combined 6 points. Also blew an 8 point lead with a little over a minute left against Seton Hall.

What they’ll be after they return to playing is a different story though. They’ve been off a long time

Yeah, Penn State is hard to gauge after this long layoff. Today’s game at Purdue should be interesting.

Didn’t take long for Beilein to bring out his auto bench policies

“that’s a strategy I used and I was probably second-guessed on a lot” after Matt Painter sits Trevion Williams after an early first foul.

Revisiting the post that turned me into the UMhoops resident Iowa stan ^^

Garza - 28 & 9 on 63/49/75 splits
Weiskamp - 40% from three
McCaffrey - 28% from three (I missed this one)
Iowa’s defense kenpom rank: 72nd

3rd on kenpom as of now and tied for 1st in Big Ten.

Garza somehow jumping 20% in ORTG is why they’ve been playing at such a great level. They would drop to the 10-15 range if his ORTG took a a small jump like 3%.

I’m not going to do the actual work/research but anecdotally there seems to be a bunch more blow outs this year

Bohannon getting hot has certainly gotten me questioning the ceiling I put on Iowa. And Garza being somehow better than last year.

Garza has somehow taken a bigger leap than any of the freshman to sophomore leaps we had under Beilein.

How about the team Iowa is facing? Northwestern is getting bombed today, they got obliterated by Illinois in the 2nd half, they got hammered by Michigan, OSU shot 50% against Northwestern.

Is Northwestern worse than Northwestern?

I think there is a mindset that goes on with lesser teams, If you’re facing a powerhouse team eg. Iowa and you can’t stop them. It really doesn’t matter how good your looks are because they will still need to hit an absolute ton of shots to even just stay close. Put it this way even if Northwestern hit 8 of 18 which is real good they would still be down 20. Northwestern has hit 45% of their shots and aren’t close in the game. It can really weigh on an opposition knowing you can hit shots but there’s still a great chance you can’t win the game.

I feel like NW got a lot of mileage off the blasting of MSU. Certainly time has shown that to not be much of an accomplishment.

I was asking what teams could be worse than Northwestern…

Now Beilein is preaching threes over long twos: “I don’t know what Penn State is teaching…”
