While Illinois hasn’t exactly been successful in any way shape or form in recent years, their fans still talk as if they’re a top-25 job in college hoops. Kinda insane. But man this really seems like a low self-esteem move. Makes so much more sense for Hoiberg and Nebraska for example.
Underwood needs to send a thank you note to Austin. Lots of rumblings he’d be the favorite(assuming no beilein or beard) for that job.
Amazing to think that we won the Big Ten that year. That was an incredible group of overachievers.
Trying to figure out Michigan’s BTT seeding and it’s looking like we’re almost locked for the 8-9 game. Assuming a win against Nebraska and a 10-10 record they can’t finish below Rutgers, IU, or Purdue in a tie since we’re undefeated against all of them.
Assuming an 11-9 record it’s looking pretty impossible to finish above any of OSU, Iowa, or PSU given our 1-4 record against those 3. The only way I can see is if PSU/OSU finish 12-8, Michigan is in a tie with Iowa for the 7 seed at 11-9, and Maryland and/or MSU are in first place. In this case we’d have a better record than Iowa against MSU/Maryland and would win the tiebreaker.
I like that spot anyway. Get a Q1 opportunity in first round against Rutgers (or maybe IU who is on the edge of being a Q1 neutral win). Then neutral against Maryland is winnable and would get us a lot of cred for a win and I would not feel bad about a loss because I have absolutely nothing against Maryland at all.
I was kind of hoping we’d play an overrated team (imo) like PSU, Illinois in a 2-7 or 3-6 game on Friday instead of against what will probably be Maryland or MSU.
Also I scheduled an appointment for 12 on that Friday because I thought there was no way Michigan would be in the 1 vs 8/9 game. Then we went 0-2 on the week. Whoops.
I’m totally cool with an 8 or a 9, with the caveat that U-M would avoid Wisconsin and MSU as long as possible down the road. Not that I don’t welcome the challenge, but they are the only teams that disturb me beyond reasonable measure to lose to. After a 2-6 conference start, a single bye is pretty choice…
Yeah, I’d like to play PSU or Illinois too, but not because they are overrated or anything. I just want revenge for going 0-3 to those teams. I also wouldn’t mind playing Wisconsin and this time hoping Trice, Potter and Ford don’t uncharacteristically combine for 64 points and they don’t shoot 48% from 3 as a team again.
I think I prefer a Rutgers-Maryland combo over any others. Such as PSU-Illinois or Iowa-Wisconsin.
I could see an argument for PSU-Illinois cause MD>>Illinois. But PSU>>Rutgers.
Iowa-Wisconsin would be roughest road among those, IMO. I’m trying to figure out which would be the “shiniest” path insofar as resume building, and it looks as though OSU and then MD would probably be, but that would require us to lose to Nebraska and come in as a 10 seed. Hard pass.
(sigh) Blue will play who they play… the trophy they’ll be lifting will be plenty shiny after four games.
One random big ten scheduling gripe, the big ten sort of screwed michigan by giving us no home weekend games the last three weeks of the regular season. Stinks for recruiting because these are often prime recruiting weekends because high school seasons are starting to end.
Great point - also very unfortunate for those among us who live out of the region and want to try to make it to a late season home game when the schedule permits, while also planting the seed to subtly brainwash our young children into eventually selecting UM as their college of choice.
Obviously just four people’s opinions, but…
Not surprised to see Michigan get a vote. Very surprised to see neither Maryland nor Michigan State get a vote.
Also fascinating that all four “experts” picked four different teams. Perhaps representative of how wide open the season has been.
Oooh, boy. Steve Bardo at work: “You should see the exacerbated look on Mark Turgeon’s face…”
And I wanted to watch this without muting it…
I will 100% buy PSU with Myreon Jones back. Dude is a baller.
The Turgeoning of Maryland continues…
Lamar Stevens 0-8 from floor, and they’re up 15 at half. Welcome back Myreon Jones.
