It’s an interesting question. I think I would? Not sure exactly.
Just my personal view, but I always want to see Michigan win. If it ends up giving MSU a share of the regular season title, so be it. I don’t get any joy from helping MSU, but I would get a lot of satisfaction from beating a good team on the road.
This reminds me of the old U of M adage. The best weekend for a MSU fan was when State won and Michigan lost. The second best weekend was when both teams lost.
I never want to be in that place.
I’m not gonna lose sleep over MSU sharing a B1G title. This isn’t football where a conference championship is worth a lot. MSU is the best team in the B1G so sharing a title should ultimately be an overall disappointment, especially to preseason expectations.
Plus a road win over Maryland could be the difference between a 6 and 7 seed
Road win over Maryland assuming we also beat Nebraska at home and we’d probably be back in 5 territory.
I just want our team to be feeling they’re playing great basketball heading into the postseason. Closing the year with a road win @Maryland could be a critical piece of building that momentum.
I’m so torn on this one. I LOATHE Sparty in every way and would hate for them to backdoor into another championship with a mediocre team. But I could never root against our team. So I guess I will take that game as a win/win proposition
Personally I value the Big Ten regular-season title a lot, and historically it has been strongly valued. It’s a banner after all, and more valuable than the tournament title.
I don’t think I could ever really root for Michigan to lose, but Michigan is probably better off long-term if MSU doesn’t get to stack up another banner.
I just don’t get how MSU getting a shared conference title impacts either team long term. It will obviously have zero impact on recruiting.
I agree that I personally value it. Moreso than a B1G tournament title. But I guess it’s just something that I don’t care that much if my rival wins. I don’t think it helps them in recruiting or anything. And I certainly don’t think it adversely affects us moving forward
I think it helps a bit with in-state prospects as stated above. Three conference titles in a row is quite a feat, that’s a good recruiting pitch to Jaden Akins as to which team he’s gonna win more with.
It’s also a big fan gloating argument.
Izzo got his team clicking at the right time like always
Izzo is a HOF coach, he’s got a title, 8 final fours, consistently has a top 15 or better team, and has put a good amount of players in the NBA.
Whether he gets another conference title is irrelevant to his recruiting at this point.
I used to think that regular season basketball titles were more important than BTT titles. I definitely don’t think so anymore!
When there is a lot of skill parity amongst most teams and generally not a lot of super skill depth (because super skill players leave for the NBA ASAP), a mid season injury or two can too dramatically impact a team’s record. Also, with the home team bias in officiating at numerous sites, records can be inappropriately negatively effected.
The BTT will be the best indicator of what teams are the best if most top players are healthy and games are played on a NEUTRAL COURT with hopefully no officiating bias.
I’m going to guess your opinion changed around 2017
The last 2 winners of the BTT have gone to the Final 4 …
I think both are important, wasn’t trying to put a marker down there. I also think that people who would root for Michigan to lose so that Michigan State doesn’t get a share of the Big Ten title are off the mark.
I noticed a lot of opinion changes on that in recent years
Duke hasn’t won a share of the ACC regular season title since 2010.
Their recruiting class overall ranking by year since then:
2, 41, 9, 1, 2, 1, 1, 1, 3, 2
I just don’t think regular season conference titles are a regular recruiting pitch used by elite coaches. Maybe Bill Self just because of his crazy streak before it got snapped last year
That is quite an accusation towards the officiating profession.
