Beilein expected to watch

Jalen Brunson vs. Evan Boudreaux tonight.

If we take Brunson, do we still go after Murray, Thornton, Battle or Winston?

Also, it seems like JB prefers Boudreaux over Esa Ahmad?

Regarding the PGs, I say we go after the '16 guys no matter what…they’re too good not to. But the coaches will probably have to get a keen sense of how much mutual interest there is from any of them…they won’t waste a lot of time on a kid who is only mildly interested. I for one am a fan of Brunson, a scoring PG. He’s got better athleticism in his latest videos than what I remember from his earlier videos, and he’s always been able to use change-of-pace to his advantage. It also sounds like he’s a good defender and competitive by nature. I think he can coexist with Walton. PG obviously isn’t our greatest need in '15, but I think like the '16s, Brunson is too good to pass up, plus there is serious mutual interest. Plus I think the coaches are going to keep trying to get in a situation where they don’t have to rely on a freshman PG.

Regarding the "4"s, Ahmad looks like a good player and someone who could compete for early PT if we think we need it. It’s hard to say where the development of Chatman (or what position he’ll play) and Wilson will be at that point. Boudreaux looks more like a glue guy, but a very good one at that. Like a more offensively gifted, slightly shorter Jordan Morgan. I think someone with that description is definitely worth pursuing.

I am concerned about our bigs going forward. This always seems to be an area of greatest weakness. I am talking 6’10" or taller. Other than McGary, who have we had in the last 20 years of elite potential?

Brunson went for 56 points last night in a 2OT win over Lake Forest and Evan Boudreaux, who had 43 pts and 21 rebounds.

Any video available?

I think Beilein prefers guys that can shoot and finish so that we can PnP and PnR effectively. Morgan and Horford can only finish at the rim and so all these teams are blitzing Nik and Caris off PnR but Donnal/Doyle being able to hit perimeter shots will alleviate that immediately.

2015 4-star SG Jalen Coleman w/ 24 points including six three-pointers at the half for La Lumiere, they lead Ontario Athlete Institute 37-12

La Lumiere defeats Athlete Institute 68-42. 2015 SG Jalen Coleman finishes w/ 34 including eight from downtown, 2016 PG Jamal Murray had 16

I think if we get Brunson then we forgo the chance of getting other small PG like Thornton and Winston. I also think Eric Davis wants to go somewhere and play the 1. Hopefully Jalen Coleman wants to be a comboguard. I’ve read on Syracuse’s board that they’ve promised Tyus Battle he could play PG and be their next MCW and they are probably our biggest competition for Jamal Murray.

If we can get Brunson but still be in it for Coleman, Battle and Murray then I am all for it but it could also potentially eliminate us for all of these players, too.

I’d rather have Brunson than any of those players.

Brunson isn’t in the same stratosphere as Tyus Battle.

I’m also inclined to think Coleman and Thornton are in another tier.

Winston and Davis aren’t as appealing as Brunson. Murray has a significantly higher ceiling.

Brunson has grown on me, though.

You’re just straight up wrong.

Not to mention Battle isn’t even a PG. If that is where he wants to play I don’t want him anyway. Same goes for Coleman and Davis.

Boeheim thinks Battle can play PG. Boeheims opinion holds more weight than yours.

Every scout on this Earth has Battle higher ranked in a deeper and better HS class. I’ll go by the words of scouts that Battle is in another stratosphere than Brunson.

I agree with Davis or Coleman not being PGs. Coleman is the better player.

Just my opinion, but clearly Davis is a plan B option if neither of the Jalens drop for us. It’s obvious that the coaches prefer them over Eric, but the recent accelerated interest in him makes me wonder if we are losing ground with the Jalens? IMO Coleman is the one we have the best chance with, and is a vastly under rated player. I would be ecstatic if we got him! Wonder if we’ve convinced Davis to wait and see what the other two do before committing? Recruiting is such a minefield. By the way, Davis had 39 and 11 in win over state ranked Romulus.

Frankly, I do not think we cast a wide enough net. It’s about us wanting them to play for us… And them wanting to play for us as well. Only 3 ships out there. ( I consider 2 b/c I’m convinced Kennard to Kentucky - just being realistic).
Kids Want to feel wanted. And with all the talent out there- we only have three offers. Not too many kids feeling our " love". I wish we would offer more as we know some will not come to fruition.

Agree.

Today I read Austin Grandstaff (a player who requested we recruit him after he decommitted) is going to visit Ohio St (a school he had no interest in when he decomitted). It’s just mind boggling what our 2015 strategy is…

Outside of Eric Davis, has there been any 2015 visitors to any of our home games?

I’ve said it for literally months - it seems we consistently get out worked on the recruiting trail. It’s beyond me as to why. You simply can’t tell a kid “hey, we’re Michigan, and we may have some interest in you. Visit multiple times and we’ll consider offering you.” Recruiting is much like public contracting to the extent that a recruit is going to gravitate toward more competitive bids - in this case competitive bids are winning, constant attention, connection with the coaching staff, communication concerning roles, etc. Winning is obviously the most important factor, and until we’re able to win a few more S16s, I feel we need to up our game significantly with the other factors. Bottom line - until we start going deep in the tourney consistently, elite recruits aren’t going to be beating down the door to play for UM, we need to beat down their doors.

“Austin Grandstaff will visit Florida for their game against Kentucky next week.”

We must feel really good about our other targets.
