2019 - Wing - Franz Wagner (Commit)

I expect him to be open minded about international prospects. It would be very narrow-minded to reject a player based on nationality. I don’t know if he would fly to Germany though.

I was thinking through Juwan Howard’s NBA teammates last night. He’s played with many of the biggest teams and names over the past couple decades. They include a Dallas team that got the Western Conference Finals in 2002 with a young Dirk Nowitski. So I’d imagine Juwan’s not a stranger to seeing people help a player from Germany get comfortable with the United States and his team.

A longer list is Yao Ming, Dikembe Mutombo, Steve Nash, Tim Hardaway, Tracy McGrady, Jason Kidd, Carmelo Anthony, Allen Iverson, Rasheed Wallace, Ben Wallace, Chuancey Billups, Dwayne Wade, LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Ray Allen.

thetruth,

do you know what assistant coaches were most involved in Franz’s official visit to Michigan last week? Do you know who Franz was most impressed with? Do you know whether our athletic director Warde Manuel met with Franz when he was here?

Michigan needs to fill scholarships with good players, so I expect that he would be

I’d imagine he’d have to make a trip out to Germany to meet the family

Based on the recruiting calendar, he is not allowed to visit Germany (or anyone) until September

FaceTime maybe?

Is he allowed to talk to Franz on the phone?

Does the September rule apply to a recruit’s brother too (ie Moe?).

Yes, he can call whenever, all inperson contact has to be done on a college campus or a designated recruiting event though

Thank you for the response. I/We appreciate it!

Excellent news Michigan still has a chance with Franz. That’s a great question if Howard would be interested. I would strongly assume he would be given the current scholarship/roster situation but you never know. I’m looking forward to see if he does reach out and if they build a relationship in short time.

Are you saying that our new HC can’t meet with Wilson or Bajema or Cumberland until September? How does a new HC get or retain these guys then?

He can meet with them if they come to Ann Arbor (on their own dime, since they already took an official). But he can call/facetime/whatever, at any time

He can’t do an in home visit? Seems like a huge flaw in the NCAA rules (big surprise) if a new coach can’t do everything he can to get to know his commits and give the kid the proper face to face contact to determine whether they are a fit with the new program and want to stick with their commitment.

No In-home visits from Mid May until September

So that means Roy Williams and Bill Self won’t have in home visits with Jalen Wilson?

I guess so much for Juwan going out and visiting Cole and Jalen to talk to them about how he envisions their roles on the team etc. I am sure that they can work around this but still doesnt feel great

I would assume the schedule works out this way because the signing period is over. It’s designed to give the coaches a break.

I totally get it, but there should be limited exceptions like in the case of a coaching change. Schools with coaching changes are already in a difficult situation and this just makes it harder for the new coach to make a smooth transition. Especially when you’re talking about kids that were committed to your school prior to the coaching change. Seems like common sense and unfairly detrimental not just to the program, but to the kid as well. They have to just make a leap of faith about their future without having a proper meeting with the coach.
