2019 - Wing - Franz Wagner (Commit)

Beilein moves in silence. The only reason we know he took the visit is because Hyland let it slip.

What type of buzz were you expecting?

Bumblebeilein buzz.

I’ll throw myself out.

I’m looking at actions/developments: if we had suddenly shut down new targets for next year’s roster, then I’d be feeling good about Franz and/or Pierce. If we start hearing about new targets, then that’s prob a negative tea leaf.

Not sure where the “new” grad transfer target sits on that spectrum…whether it’s legacy interest from prior to the visit or whether it’s a new development.

I agree and I expect that some on our list of top 4 won’t be prioritized much longer.

I would say the “new” grad transfer targets may say more about the Harlond Beverly decision plus the Quinonez upcoming decision because the new targets are 2’s. Speculation but possible.

Rivals is saying Pierce has a spot if he wants it. Really hope they offer Hyland and Wagner spots before he snags it.

Pierce absolutely has a spot if he wants it. He took an official visit and is down to UM, UNC and Notre Dame. Didn’t realize there was any doubt about that.

As a rule, anyone who takes (not just schedules) an official visit should be considered a priority.

While I can’t guarantee it, I would also assume Wagner has a spot if he wants it…which I believe he will. I don’t think they will turn Wagner away. Beilien isn’t going to Germany as an insurance policy.

I guess Pierce just isn’t that exciting to me. Loose handle, has played lower level competition. 3rd team All CAA is like = to an average B1G player. I really like what Hyland brings to the table though. Late adds of he and Wagner would be really nice.

Well an Average Big Ten player most likely is Hyland’s ceiling next year, and Pierce’s floor. So it depends on if you’d prefer help this year and then get a 2020 guy or if you like Hyland more than any potential 2020 we can add.

My guess (or maybe my hope) - Michigan would take any of the 4 main targets right now if they want to commit. There is still a hierarchy though.
1a - Wagner - the skill and legacy are too much to pass up - huge ceiling
1b - Pierce - fills a hole in next years roster with an established mature player without sacrificing long-term flexibility
3 - Quinones - fits the biggest hole for next year to a T - the personality and situation surrounding him leave some questions - is he beating down the door to come to Michigan?
4 - Hyland - I would guess that there is a sizeable gap between him and the other prospects in desire - potential high ceiling but a lot of question marks surrounding him too (e.g. level of competition)

With Zavier and Teske only around for 1 more year, I’m really hoping Michigan can maximize on next season. In that case, Pierce is the best bet. I dont see Hyland contributing much as a freshman based on what we have seen in recent years from Beilein freshmen not named Iggy.

If Michigan cannot get Franz, in order to maximize potential for next season I would hope they look at one of their grad transfer guard targets.

From what I’ve seen, it feels far more likely that Pierce is ready to contribute next year than Hyland.

I agree. Franz is far and away my number one, really my dream recruit, and I’ve always like Quinones, but Pierce is very attractive as a one year piece of the puzzle to help us next year. If we don’t get Franz I definitely want Pierce. I would also be happy with Franz AND Pierce. In any case, though, I’ll just trust in John Beilein.

That’s probably true, but if we were to get Franz then I’d rather have Hyland’s upside and combo guard ability than Pierce as a likely bench forward.

Bringing Pierce definitely benefits next season more than Hyland does, but a sophomore Hyland is almost certainly more valuable in 2020 than some freshmen. Therefore, I would argue that Franz + Hyland is a better combination than Franz + Pierce.

Oh I don’t doubt that. I agree. I just think the ceiling for next year is lower than this year by a smidge because the team limitations will be the same but a little worse. I’d rather prep for 2020.

JB is telling Pierce that he’ll likely be the starter at the 2. So, that’s how we should view Pierce as far as roster fit… Even though I’m skeptical of how that’ll work.
