2019 - Wing - Franz Wagner (Commit)

I thought Pierce was likely being recruited as a 3?

What is the source of the info ReegsShannon that JB has told Pierce that he would start at the 2? If true, then Beilein must feel he has little chance to recruit Quinones or any other SG that would be better than Pierce at the 2.

Also, if true, I hope this means he plans to get Wagner to play the 3 position.

I think it means Beilein is planning on Wagner as his other commit and everyone else he is recruiting is competing for the other roster spot.

I can’t see him telling Pierce and Quinones they’re likely to start at the 2 and taking both of them.

I think next year is more likely to be our year than 2020. We have a senior Z and Teske next year. Those 2 are going to hurt to lose in 2020. Plus who knows with Livers, he could really excel next year and leave early.

You are what you can guard so have a hard time seeing pierce at the 2

Yep, in fact Coach B says that all the time, so if Coach B truly is recruiting Pierce to play the 2, count me in as one who’ll trust his judgement on that. :slightly_smiling_face:

Get past our guards and wings you’ll have the best defensive center in college hoops to contend with.

Will be very interesting to see our lineups if we get Pierce. Especially if we get Wagner too. That’d be a ton of 6’7-6’9 Wings.

Not a doubt in my mind that Coach B and staff would figure it out!

That’s how I would rate them. Curious to see if the staff agrees.

As of today, Wilson will be the most likely starter at the 3. If Franz commits, that could change things.

I was picturing livers there , johns starting at the 4. You think Wilson steps in and seizes the spot?

but if we were to get Franz then I’d rather have Hyland’s upside and combo guard ability than Pierce as a likely bench forward.

If we get Wagner, I’d rather hold the scholarship for a class of 2020 prospect than use it on Hyland. Keep the final scholarship slot open for a grad transfer or for Iggy to re-evaluate and come back for one more year.

Pierce doesn’t really excite me either. His sophomore year shooting looks like it may be the outlier compared to his freshman and junior season numbers. Add in the increase in opponent skill jumping from CAA to a power conference…I’m skeptical he can stick in UM’s rotation next season. Much like Simmons struggled with the jump in competition + new system.

But I would rather take a risk on tying up a scholarship for 1 year on a Grad Transfer late in recruiting than take a flier on a 4year recruit to fill scholarship allotments (note: Wagner & Quinones are top recruits, in my opinion, and not late fillers)

I mean Hyland is a top recruit at least according to 247. I am not sure why Hyland is viewed as some late class filler by so many. The kid can play. He was off the radar because he couldn’t play for over a year.

For me, I am not sure if Hyland will step in on day 1. If not, then you have signed 3 or 4 guys in the same class who are playing similar positions. Wilson, Franz, Bajema and Hyland would be battling for 2 spots over the next 4 years. Someone is probably transferring within a year or two. That is the only reason I am not interested in both (Franz and Hyland). Outside of that, I agree with what you are saying.

I actually think that would be four players fighting over 3 spots. Wilson could play the 3-4, Franz could end up playing 2-4, and Bajema could play the 2-3. Hyland is probably just a 2. Maybe PG in a pinch. Someone is going to transfer no matter what. Not next year, but the year after there will absolutely be a logjam at the 3-4 spots. But considering the rate of roster turnover these days, that’s more than ok.

Not saying I would sign Hyland or not but he appears to have more PG skills than MAAR did at time of signing and MAAR played plenty of minutes there when needed.

He will be a three in our system.

Everyone seems so caught up on 2 vs 3 vs 4 etc. when evaluating some of these late adds. The bottom line is that there is a lot of interchangeability.

Just as an example, going into this season there were some very real conversations that Ignas Brazdeikis could play primarily at the two, not the four.

Michigan could have a roster that has a bunch of players who are better suited to play the 3 than the 2 but maybe someone just plays the 2 for the year, even if it isn’t their best spot.
