So, with Tyus Jones entering the draft, does Duke take the first of Thornton or Murray to reclassify and commit? And then gets Smith in '16 if Thornton/Murray is one and done? Filthy. Would also hurt to see Thornton and Kennard playing together for someone else.
Honestly, it’s hard to take much from that film because the competition level is really bad. Nearly half the highlight film is him giving outlet passes in transition.
I’ll give it a shot though - first, there is no way this kid is a PG, his handle is far too weak to play PG at the high major level. He’s a 2/3 all the way. First name that comes to my mind is Duncan Robinson. Huerter is probably around 6’5ish, can obviously shoot the ball, but doesn’t have a true jumpshot, but does have a fairly quick release. Seems to have decent passing ability, but the competition level is so bad that it’s hard to take anything from it. Not a horrible athlete, but certainly not above average. Seems to have decent verticality, but not very agile in terms of lateral movement or vertical speed.
Overall - pretty much the same as Robinson (although he is obviously a few years younger), he’s a decent player to have if you surround him with people that can create off the dribble, and might be able to do some things off PnR if facing the third best defender on the opposition. Overall, I’d exhaust my options with primary targets first and maybe take a flyer on this kid later. We need ballhandling creators more than shooters at this point.
EYBL stats seem to indicate he’s pretty much a ‘just shooter’ type against better comp. Taken 37 shots in 4 games, 26 of which have been 3 point attempts. Shooting 46% from distance, but only 36% from two. Really curious to see if he can shoot off the bounce.
ESPN local radio affiliate (presumably Albany) interview with Clint Jackson of Rivals with respect to Huerter posted today. Huerter has been recently offered by Iowa, Maryland, Miami (FL), Marquette, Xavier. Jackson says he’s been texting with Huerter for the past 3-4 days, and thinks UM and Syracuse (hometown) would be high on Huerter’s list if offered.
Described Huerter as ‘quick’, with good extension on his jumpshot. Initially gave a comparison to Bronson Koenig, before later on giving the inevitable Nik Stauskas comparison.
I just need to see more of Huerter…because if I’m being honest, the film above (against subpar competition) did not reflect Huerter as being quick, nor did it indicate that he had great extension on his jumpshot (doesn’t have a true jumpshot). Also, the comparison to Nik in HS is a bit extreme in my opinion, as Stauskas was a supreme ballhandler even in HS, I don’t see that in Huerter at all.
Edit - tweet below concerning elevation
Really like 2016 SG Kevin Huerter of City Rocks. 6-5 junior with a smooth floor game. Big time elevation on jumper.
Interest in him picked up big time after coaches saw him at EYBL. So he must have shown something. 4 for 11 on twos doesn’t tell us much about his game beyond the three point shooting. He averaged 4 assists and 1.5 turnovers per game in the 4 games.
Was able to get some more film of Huerter from the NY state playoffs this year. Again, still need more film. But it appears that Huerter is decent vertically, appears to be a decent passer, he does show the ability to shoot after a pump fake, but his handle looks pretty loose, and I definitely wouldn’t classify him as quick by any means…struggled to get any type of separation. Pretty much Duncan Robinson with more verticality based on the limited film I’ve viewed.

Was able to get a bit more film in Huerter from the NY state championship game. This is probably the best film in terms of reflecting Huerter’s ability to shoot off the bounce. He hits a nice midrange jumpshot off the pick, and also hits a floater in the lane. Still not buying the he’s quick or has handle argument though, none of the film reflects that. Obviously can shoot, but even the passing is mostly in transition, although some of the film reflects he can hit cutters in a half court set.
Mannnn stop it. Kenny Anderson, Jamal Crawford and Jason Williams are examples of SUPREME BALL HANDLERS, Nik was at best a good ball handler. I saw the film back then and Dribbling skills exhibitions with no one guarding you does not constitute Supreme Ball Handling skills. Stay just as brutal with your assesment with players you like, don’t fluff it up.
Supreme ball handler? Or good ball handler? Smh.

Supreme…Stauskas was probably one of the 5 best ballhandlers in the country during HS, and his film reflected that.
Yes, those guys were supreme ballhandlers…in the professional ranks. Show me the film of said players in high school, if not, then it is just pure speculation on your behalf. Nik was certainly an elite ballhandler in HS, no doubt about it. Again, if you are that adamant about your views, just message me. Refuse to bicker about off topic dialogue.
No coming out of High school into college. I’m not speaking of the Pro ranks. Didn’t even mention the likes of Shamgod Wells. Go do some homework then get back to me. You have no Idea what constitutes Supreme Ball Handling skills if you think Nik had them.

And I’m the guy that is allegedly arrogant, with the superiority complex!
Nik had the ball on a string. Think about him going between the legs – the wrong way – against Wiscy for his dagger in the Kohl Center, or creating space in the corner against the very good defenders of OSU. I don’t know about supreme or as good as Jason Williams, and it doesn’t really matter – he was good enough that it was one of the things that separated him from most college players.
