NBA Summer League 2019

2019/

Scanned a few rosters with some surprises in no particular order:

Knicks: Iggy. Zak Irvin
Heat: Duncan Robinson
Cavs: MAAR
Warriors: JP
Bulls: Ethan HAPP
Hawks: Bruno F, Nick Ward
Bucks: DJ Wilson
Pelicans: Aubrey Dawkins
Spurs: Darrius Morris
Wizards: Assume MOE Wagner

Let the games begin.

Surprised to see Wilson there - he’s a third year guy (normally players only go two times unless they are fighting for a roster spot) who is expected to be in their rotation next year with the departure of Mirotic and Ilyasova.

DJ has already shown he can tear up summer league - not sure what it will do for him.

Bucks may have some new things they want to try with him in a no pressure environment. Maybe play him more at the 5 or ask him to handle the ball a bit more. Doubt he plays every game too.

May only play 1 game

Good for MAAR getting run for Beileins squad. He’s a guy I thought before getting injured could make an NBA squad and be a respectable backup guard.

Went over my head at first that it’s MAAR on the Cavs. That’s cool to see. McQuaid on the Pistons is the obvious story for Detroit, but they got Uthoff as well for Summer League.

Good to know that D Mo is still there.

MAAR played for the Cavs G League affiliate, so that probably has more to do with it then anything JB related

A useful viewing guide here that Michigan’s sports info department put together. This is all tentative (and I think that Moe Wagner’s status is probably in the air because of the trade).

I didn’t realize JB was head coaching the Cavs’ summer league team. They’re up 11-2 four minutes in. This is so weird to watch

I didn’t either. That’s very atypical, but I guess since he’s a rookie coach and they have lots of young players they wanted to do it.

Very on brand for Beilein.

MAAR looks so small out there

I think lots of first year coaches work with the summer league team.

Maybe summer in Ann Arbor wasn’t so bad after all.

Duncan deserves a contract IMO

He needs to be there in 15 days for this to guarantee. Right now it’s just “dibs”.

A bit of a struggle in game one for Poole. 6 points, 0/6 from 3.

MAAR with 0 points in 21 minutes.

Darius Morris had 7 points, 4 assists.

This is actually very common. All rookie head coaches do it, as far as I can remember. I remember James Borrego did it in Charlotte, Lloyd Pierce in Atlanta, and even Nick Nurse for Toronto last season. Both Beilein and Memphis’ new coach are leading their respective summer league teams this year, too.
