Michigan Players in the NBA

Great news, all you can ask for is a chance to compete and with the Clippers? That’s gotta be cool!

I don’t think he is able to make the team under a typical (vet minimum) contract. Can only go from an Exhibit 10 deal to a two-way deal with the NBA team’s G-League affiliate.

Correct, I believe an exhibit 10 just flows into a typical two-way deal if he isn’t cut.

Trey had a good year last year. I’m surprised there wasn’t more interest in him on the open market.

Trey had a really good year last year, definitely. But, he is about as much of a 3rd PG as you can be in the NBA. Extremely efficient scorer from the midrange and can hit from three, but is too small to see over the defense and really playmake for others. Tries hard on defense, but is just super limited by his (lack of) size. He is basically a combo, scoring guard locked in the body of a small PG.

He definitely has a place in the NBA, but he the minimum contract he got is fair, IMO.

I respect your knowledge on this subject, but then when I see him have forty-point scoring nights, I get a little confused about his limitations. Are those a matter of him getting hot in less meaningful games, or taking advantage of matchups that aren’t as common (the few teams he gets that midrange shot against) . . . ? From a layman’s perspective it looks like he has proven he can produce.

One year contracts are just tough. He will be back in the same situation next year. And depending on how many minutes he gets with Philly, the market could shrink. Trey has really produced when actually given the chance. I guess I just don’t understand how he’s the kind of guy who is on the verge of not even being in the league given the lack of interest from teams. He is a bucket getter regardless of size.

I’m hopeful Trey will be given an opportunity in Philly to go get a bucket when it matters. Looking at the roster, there aren’t a ton of “go get a bucket” guards who can get their own off the dribble.

I think he’s a lot better than people realize. I’d rather have him than whoever the Lakers will trot out as a backup PG next year.

Yeah. That was a march game between two sub .500 Eastern Conference teams. He’s overall not that efficient since he lives off the midrange and he’s also basically a tiny SG since he’s not a great playmaker. Now I think Trey can get a couple more NBA contracts which would be huge as each contract he signs now is over 2.5 million.

I think he can be a backup PG for teams, depending on their roster construction. Like for PHI, he’ll be Ben Simmons backup PG. With that spot they want someone who can score with the 2nd unit, or let Embiid, Harris, Simmons playmake if he’s in the game with some of the first unit. That’s a pretty good situation for him to be in. He’s a much better shooter than TJ McConnell who was their backup last couple years. Hopefully he plays well and makes it a long way in the playoffs, maybe even gets a ring.

Oh dang I didn’t realize McConnell isn’t there anymore. That’s good for Trey.

Yeah, I mean he can definitely have those games where he goes off for huge scoring totals. Scoring tends to be overrated by the general public because it is the “sexiest” statistic and the one most easily identified when watching a game or reading a box score. And to be sure, he was pretty efficient scoring last season. He just has some pretty clear limitations that make him a minimum (+) type player in the NBA.

They also signed Raul Neto from the Jazz. Neto has had trouble staying healthy, but the Jazz were better when he was on the court all four years of his career – kind of surprising since he was a backup for the majority of his time in Utah. Trey should compete with him for the backup PG role in Philly.

Unfortunately for Pacers fans like me, Indiana signed TJ.

He is what he is now, and NBA folks know better than us, but it is odd. He had a rookie year you’d think he could have built on. Coaches change and fits change, but you’d think he’d hit on a spot where he can flourish and stick. Had enough chances at this point that you figure at this point he is what he is.

NBA is obsessed with measurables. They’d rather have Frank Nkitilina than burke even though Trey has been way better. The greater the height, the longer the leash. No matter your basketball ability.

Agreed Frank N is a bust and Trey had certainly outplayed him in NY. His time in Dallas was solid as well but they’re in love with their veterans. I think Trey sticks for several more years, not a bad life, $1.5M min contracts will continue to rise as he ages and he’s already over the $13M mark. Probably has a $20M career over 8-9 years. Not Bad!
