Juwan Howard Coaching Rumors - Summer 2022

The article also mentioned there would be a lot of candidates. Juwan interviewed last time and is friends with Lebron so he’s an easy name to mention

I don’t think he’ll bolt with 2 of his kids playing at UM but who knows. What I do know is that the same haters who said Juwan is a terrible coach would now be saying how screwed Michigan is if he left.

What about Nate Nate Oats screams have to have him and pay a $10 million buyout fee if a coach is needed? Alabama had a great '20-'21 season, but was merely OK this season, and pretty bad in his first season there. He was good at Buffalo taking over a very successful program from Bobby Hurley. He’s also a major dick. He recruits very well to be sure–that doesn’t sell me that he would be a guy at the top of my list.

Maybe…he needs good talent but not elite talent to have good teams. At his age he’d only be the answer for the next 5 seasons at most though, and that would concern me more than anything else.

There’s a window here for Juwan to shoot down rumors and actually use it as a positive recruiting point. I hope he chooses to do that sooner than later.

Oats has had good amount of success for a school like bama, coached the best mac team in recent memory, plays an extremely modern and fun style of basketball, has heavy ties to the state of Michigan and has proven to be a high level recruiter. Unless you’re getting brad stevens, hard to find a coach who checks anywhere near the amount of boxes oats does.

Juwan really doesn’t need to say anything aside from what he’s always said. It seems like the only people to give these rumors legitimacy are Michigan Fans themselves, out of some misplaced sense of martyrdom. There’s zero chance Juwan joins the Lakers after he just signed his son to come play with him. Like, the possibilty isn’t even there.

Juwan isn’t leaving until he wins a national championship.

Does he need to say anything? Of course not. But he could use it as a positive, and to not do that is missing an opportunity.

But to your point about legitimacy…a rumor reported by Shams has legitimacy. What is unclear at this moment is whether Juwan would reciprocate the interest or not. Clearly, you feel he would not, and I am less certain but also believe he’d end up staying at the end of the day. But the “rumor” is legit…the Lakers have interest.

Shams might know of what the Lakers are interested in, doesn’t mean he knows anything about Juwan. And a cursory sentence dropping Juwan’s name in the middle of a 500+ word article doesn’t mean much.

Yes, what is being reported is that the Lakers have interest. Nobody here is saying that Juwan definitely has interest. That is in fact the very fact pattern (the Lakers have interest but Juwan does not) that Juwan could use as a recruiting positive, which was my original post that you replied to.

Proclaiming that Nate Oats checks more boxes than anyone other than Brad Stevens…I don’t even know what to say. We’ll just have to agree to disagree.

I don’t think Juwan will leave, but out of a “fun” exercise I’ll list some names Warde should call that might not be the obvious ones:

Mike Young
Buzz Williams
Niko Medved
Jerry Stackhouse
Anthony Grant

Actually as I think about it, Grant may be my #1 semi possible choice.

I’ve always been a big Buzz Williams fan

I would get Rick Pitino.

Would be very hard to get behind a coach with a track record like Grant. I know that he didn’t get a chance with his best ever roster, but that’s his only tourney team since 2012.

He had to totally rebuild after 2020 and this years team was tournament caliber while being among the 10 youngest teams in the country. They’re gonna be really good in the next couple years. He has NBA experience which is where he retooled his offense and runs tons of modern actions. I think he’s a really good coach. Don’t even care about the Bama tenure at this point, think he’s improved since then. I get that from that view he doesn’t seem like a great candidate though.
