College Basketball 2022-23 Discussion

Give me some context Dylan! What makes it better?

Penn State is probably one of the worst high-major jobs out there. Notre Dame is a major national brand that has had plenty of basketball success.

I donā€™t know what the comparison between the two would be really.

In terms of recent success (since 97), Notre Dame is 33rd in KenPomā€™s program rankings while Penn State is 79th.

You guys you guys you guys!!! I think Pitt might be a Q1 win now!!! Did we do it???

Quinn was mentioned. Along with Monty Williams if we are talking NBA people.

I did have this thought as well. Even when he was at Michigan, I thought ND calling could be about the only spot he would consider, outside the NBA of course.

My thought is that he is done coaching in college. Sounds like he was done at Michigan when he left because of recruiting, OAD, NIL and that was before NIL even blew up. If Iā€™m ND might make the call to see if he were interested but I think he is content at this point.

Admissions would be easier at Penn State, but overall itā€™s no contest, especially for a guy with history in Indiana.

I hadnā€™t paid much attention, but Brey has been struggling for a while. The middle of the ACC has been underwhelming for a decade.

Clearly, a tournament team with that resume. Who says no?

Feels like a stopover for Shrewsberry. Heā€™s a guy we should be watching for the future too.

It is interesting because Iā€™m intrigued with Micah as a coaching prospect butā€¦ Thereā€™s a real chance that he finishes his 2nd season without ever making the NCAA Tournament or potentially having a winning record in the league.

PSU is a tough job, but the program was reasonably competitive when Micah was hired (top 100 KP 8 of the last 9 years).

If it wasnā€™t Painter-this, NBA-that, Brad Stevens, etc. Would Notre Dame be jumping over the moon about him as a candidate?

Feels like a bit of a high risk, high reward situation, but I do like the fit.

Thoughts on Shrewsberry:

  1. Are we sure Penn State is making the tournament this year? Does Notre Dame hire him if he doesnā€™t?
  2. In this two stints at Purdue the team was awesome in Year 1 (not sure how much credit he gets for that) and then worse the next two.
  3. Purdue has missed three tournaments in the past 17 years, if you count 2020 as a miss which it wouldā€™ve been. Shrewsberry was on staff for two of those, and the third came the year after he left (ie with players he had a hand in recruiting/developing)
  4. Penn State is absolutely going to dunk Rutgersā€™ head in the toilet on Tuesday because I wrote this.

I think whether they make the tournament or not, this season is probably a credit for him, not a demerit.

Agree or not, but that Stevens connection is EXTREMELY in demand right now, after the (on court at least) success of Ime Udoka and Joe Mazzulla.

ND is not going to hire a guy that old, no matter how good he is, and no way JB is going back into the coaching meat grinder. Heā€™s done.

second time this guyā€™s come up in two days, since I mentioned him yesterday when we were talking about the michigan/ND NIT matchup that dion harris won at the buzzer. had no idea quinn was still involved in basketball!

Yeah JB is just too old to get even consideration for a decent job, and might be to old to do a good job too. If he wants to coach CBB again heā€™ll have to a RIck Pitino and find a MAAC team to coach

I met Beilein a few months ago and asked him directly if he regretted the Cavs thing. He said ā€œI should have retiredā€ and I took that as he was done with college basketball.
