College Basketball 2022-23 Discussion

There’s just zero chance a team with Hunter Dickinson and Emoni Bates on it doesn’t eat itself alive entirely due to non-basketball related things. I would feel bad for any other player on the roster if they were put in that situation.

If you want a transfer portal rehash who would have been perfect (and isn’t in the right spot): Jacob Grandison. I think he’d be way more useful for Michigan at the 4 than TWill.

I think Bates would be, too. That’s all.

One thing I think people overlook about Bates is how young he was when he struggled as a freshman.

For perspective:

Dug turns 20 on January 8th this year
Emoni turns 19 on January 28th this year

He never needed to be the prospect he used to be to be useful for us. He just needed to be more useful than Tschetter/Barnes. I think he’s at least proved that.

We don’t have to rehash these but that I think it’s fair to post Emoni updates in a college basketball thread. We just don’t need to turn every update into trashing him for EMU still sucking / defending him for not being the reason.

I am like Dylan about rehashing the Bates argument. But, as talented as he is, he is not a good teammate, does not play team basketball, defense is usually not in his vocabulary and is downright irritating with his mean mugging stare down antics at every little success he has on the court. Just about every team he has been on since the Bates Academy mess his teammates have looked for an escape hatch away from him.

Any fresh Frankie Collins takes?

His hot FT shooting has come back to earth a bit

I think he’s Arizona State’s best player, also this:

I think there are going to be a lot of UGLY games in the Pac 12 this year and ASU should be ready to tussle in those. Legitimately a good defensive team but so flawed offensively.

Ask an disingenuous question, get a genuine response, lol

In all seriousness Frankie has been better than I expected but with his shooting numbers crashing, somewhat similar to what the skeptics thought. I’d be interested to see what his shooting numbers would look like on a team where he didn’t need to be top 15 in usage.

That chart was just Pac 12 high-ish usage players (not national). The problem is that he’s the 3rd least efficient in the conference.

Not sure how you can have Frankie Collins be a low-usage player though, considering he basically needs the ball to be effective.

Yeah obviously there is a floor to his usage…I just guess I wonder if it would be 27% on team with a few more functional pieces

One of the Cambridges scores pretty efficiently, and their center does too, but it seems like he has a hard time playing half the game.

Great, so which 100 or so teams are dropping back to D2?

That’s quite a list. Wow. I’m a little surprised that Tyger Campbell has that much usage. … and a good ORtg. I wonder if he’s someone Dug should aspire to be from a development standpoint…different players, but pretty good progress from him the last couple of years.

I didn’t understand the attractiveness of Harrison Ingram when we were recruiting him and I still don’t understand it now. To me, he’s Kam Chatman 2.0.

Campbell is probably one of the 5 best PGs in the country. FWIW.

Here’s the same list for the Big Ten:

I know! And yet when we played them in the Final Four you could never have convinced me of that. I figured he would top out as “solid pass-first PG on a good team” and he’s been much more than that despite being undersized.

This is sort of the definition of a good PG, though. That’s exactly what you want.

Wow…look at Dain Dainja!

Also, remind me again why so many people like Tyler Wahl? That’s the #1 usage player and orders of magnitude worse in ORtg! As a senior!

I would also like to point out our friends Audige & Buie with their combined 52% usage and sug-100 ORtg as reasons why I’m not buying NW stock from KenPom.
