Big Ten Conference Awards

…and one of Walton’s best games of the season wrapped up an hour after ballots were due in to the league.

If ballots were due at Noon today instead of last night, I wonder if any voters would have slid Walton higher?

Thanks for stats, @BleedBlue! Walton was a plus defender, too. How was Mason defensively?

Hopefully this is just more coal to stoke the fire.

Or, if Walton’s big game was on Saturday and Melo’s buzzer beater was on Sunday after the polls had already closed.

Shouldn’t the Big Ten Tournament be included in the final evaluation?

Mason had a slightly higher steals rate; Walton had a huge edge in defensive rebounding (23rd in the conference, behind 22 guys 6’6" and taller). The Gophers are of course a better overall defensive team, with shot blocking being their strongest suit; they are also pretty good at preventing 3 point attempts and some of the credit for that no doubt belongs to Mason. Michigan, however, is even better at that (10th nationally vs. Minnesota’s 51st), so it’s hard to find any numbers to argue that Mason is even equal to Walton defensively.
