Increased rumblings of Turgeon’s imminent departure from Maryland
No way Bingham should transfer down. If he went in the portal he would get tons of interest. He would be insane to go to UDM or Oakland
I understand and acknowledged as much. But is Snow’s friendship with AAU coaches really going to convince AAU coaches and college players to transfer to PSU as a non on court staff? That’s really all I’m questioning. But AAU coaches are so far out of my sphere of knowledge I can admit to probably being totally wrong here.
I don’t like to hear that. Maryland has a lot of upside as a program. I’m happy with Turgeon being there.
If he’s looking to go back to the midwest that leaves Kansas State and Iowa State? Neither are terrible jobs but both are in shambles right now.
Iowa State has already made their hire. An awful one btw
Iowa State hired UNLV’s coach.
Ah yeah I couldn’t remember. And KSU hasn’t fired Weber yet and doesn’t appear like they are going to. So that leaves Marquette and Depaul. I don’t see it happening
right and if he thinks College Park is too close to DC, too big-city, too fast-paced, I don’t see how Chicago is a better fit for him
yeah I mean if you manage to miss the dance with a senior Mike Daum I don’t see why you should keep your job anywhere
I don’t know who the available coaches are, but MD could be a premier program. If I’m the wealthy alums, I pony up serious money and seek to move that university toward the top of the B1G. There’s a bit of a vacuum right now, IMO, beyond the UM.
The NBA is not as big as the other three sports, and I think you’re underrating how popular the Twins are up here (the Vikings get the most attention of any of them).
So college sports doesn’t get as much play here, but… it still gets play. The University of Minnesota gets frontline media coverage in the three major sports, and the Twin Cities-centric nature of media here (e.g. want to listen to sports radio? KFAN is enormously popular and can be heard on network stations throughout the state) means that the teams get attention.
But not pressure, not the same way pro teams do, and not the way that Michigan does or, say, a program like Iowa without a pro team overshadowing them. Even hockey, which should be elite every year and has a significant fanbase, lets Don Lucia float through mediocrity for years before a change is made.
It’s actually a really good position for the right coach. The ceiling is lower, but there is a real fanbase that will sell out your facilities if you are good and there is time to get good without a quick-trigger firing.
I see nothing anywhere about how Johnson means to play.
Really wanted him to be asked that, but it was all feelingsball talk in the interview I heard.
Honestly I’m not positive he knows yet; might depend on his assistants, which, to his credit, he expressed a willingness to invest in even if they were significant.
IMO, within the B1G, a powerhouse version of Maryland poses the biggest threat to Ohio State. OSU is the easternmost original B1G program with the most success. Elite Maryland wouldn’t necessarily affect PSU and Rutgers because those programs don’t recruit in the first place.
Zed Key, Alonzo Gaffney, Luther Muhammad in recent years, further back guys like Kam Williams, LaQuinton Ross…OSU has often supplemented its recruiting core of OH signees with east coasters.
Maybe Izzo is double-agenting him off to somewhere else?
I am just basing it off a few friends that live there and it’s always Wild/Vikings/Twins and they just laugh at the Golden Gophers.
Maybe it has to do with the investment they make in their coach. Pitino wasn’t getting paid much, they obviously didn’t pay this guy much.
Well, right now we are the ones with the DMV pipeline…
If Turgeon does leave, hopefully the next coach will also have a strained relationship with DeMatha.
True but M historically signs all over the country. OSU has OH and IN and that’s it. If Maryland builds a wall around the DMV we can still hit TX, FL, CA, whatever.
