Archie absolutely deserved to be fired if heā€™s got a guy dishing out 24 assist per game and canā€™t make the tournament.

Fran McCaffery Receives Contract Extension

IOWA CITY, Iowa ā€“ University of Iowa head menā€™s basketball coach Fran McCaffery has signed a four-year extension to his current contract. The agreement was announced today by Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Director of Athletics Chair Gary Barta.

McCaffery is now signed through the 2027-28 competitive season. His base salary remains unchanged for the next two seasons, however there is a longevity bonus at the end of the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. His annual salary will increase each of the last five years. If 25 percent or more of a season is not able to be played (pandemic), the base salary will be reduced by 10 percent.

ā€œI am excited to announce the extension of Franā€™s contract,ā€ said Barta. ā€œHeā€™s earned it. Heā€™s built a strong foundation upon which we can continue to build for years to come. We originally planned to provide the extension at the end of last season, but paused due to the pandemic. Iā€™ve appreciated Franā€™s patience through it all.

ā€œTo say Fran, Margaret, and the McCaffery Family have embraced Iowa and Hawkeye Athletics is certainly an understatement. They have been actively involved across the state and within the local community in so many ways over the past decade. It is truly a family affair.ā€

McCaffery has guided the nationally-ranked Hawkeyes to a 21-8 regular season record and a third-place finish in the Big Ten with a 14-6 league mark in 2020-21. Iowa has been ranked inside the Top 15 of the Associated Press Poll every week this season, including No. 5 on March 9. He has guided Iowa to first-division finishes in eight of the last nine seasons and 20 wins or more in seven of the last nine seasons. McCaffery will coach the Hawkeyes in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the last seven completed seasons. He is Iowaā€™s second all-time winningest coach with 215 overall wins and 103 Big Ten victories.

McCaffery continues to create interest with recruits on a national level due to his tireless work ethic. He recruited and coached two-time Sporting News National Player of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year, Luka Garza. He has coached a first-team All-Big Ten honoree in five of the last seven seasons (Devyn Marble, 2014; Aaron White, 2015; Jarrod Uthoff, 2016; Peter Jok, 2017; and Luka Garza, 2020-21), the most over a seven-year span since 1956-62.

ā€œI am grateful to Gary Barta and President Bruce Harreld for their continued support,ā€ said McCaffery. ā€œIt truly is an honor to represent the University of Iowa and coach the tremendous young men in our program. I am proud of what our team accomplished during the regular season, and we are eager to compete for a national championship this month.ā€

Second-seeded Iowa (21-8) will begin NCAA Tournament play on Saturday against No. 15 seed Grand Canyon (17-6). Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 5:25 p.m. (CT) at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. The game will be televised nationally on TBS.

Pitino gave an interview last week that I heard excerpted on MN radio, basically saying that he hadnā€™t (at the time) been fired and that he had a great working relationship with the ADā€¦ and also that he understands the business, and the relationship with the AD is good even if the AD has to make a decision in ā€œa couple of weeks.ā€

Honestly it was a classy way of putting things. Even if he was secretly fired and not saying anything, he put a good face on it.

Not just you. No chatter about Beilein up here, though, relative to a slightly younger guy like Dutcher.

He probably knows what happened at Underwoodā€™s previous stops.

My question is why would Dutcher at Age 61 leave San Diego where he has lived for the last 20+ years to re-build at Minnesota. I know he went to High School and College there, but his childhood was spent in SE Michigan. He really has to think San Diego is his home.

I can see him taking a call and maybe even an interview, but only to leverage an extension / raise from San Diego St.

Fisherā€™s salary topped out at just over a million a year at SDSU. Dutcher is making $850k there. Little Richy Pitino made over $2 million a year. Would SDSU be willing to double or more Dutcherā€™s salary? They might not be able to. They might opt to let Dutcher walk, give the job to David Velazquez, who is an alum and has been an assistant there for almost a decade.

My prediction for the iu job is beilein with dane fife as lead assistant and coach in waiting

Wouldnā€™t that be disrespectful to Fife? Also, when have you ever had a ā€œcoach-in-waitingā€ situation for two guys that arenā€™t very close?

Also, itā€™s pretty funny how unhappy IU fans seem to be with a theoretical Beilein hire

The Pitino news has been around Minnesota for a couple weeks now. No surprise there. Dutcher is a name Iā€™m hearing a lot.

Pitino Jr. has never struck me as a slimy dude like his dad. His pressers have always been thoughtful and respectful. And I donā€™t remember off the court stuff under him. Even if his face annoys me I never disliked him. Heā€™s justā€¦ not good at the coaching stuff.

Yeah why would Beilein agree to a HCIW setup with a guy heā€™s never worked with?

Beilein knows the fifes, he actually talked to dane about joining one of his early um staffs. Hes also not against having a coach in waiting, he offered it to juwan a few years ago.

Gary Barta is the king of signing coaches to unnecessarily long and expensive contracts. See Kirk Ferentz.

Sure maybe you want to extend Fran beyond 2024 after his nice season, but was tacking on another 4 years necessary? The guy wasnā€™t going anywhere.

He did? I didnā€™t know that! How interesting.

I donā€™t think SDSU goes to 2M, but might go to $1.25M. I am about the same age as Dutcher, I would rather stay at SDSU for that, than go to Minnesota for up to 2X that. Weā€™ll see.

This whole thing strikes me as unnecessary also. Is there that much of a market for Fran? I have a dollar that says this is the best Fran team that Iowa will see. I guess Barta just wants coaches that are stuck in mediocrity.
