Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 2)

If I were an Iowa fan, I don’t know that I would be unhappy about this. Fran has delivered teams that are more competitive just about every year. They have a consensus top ten team entering the NCAA tourney this year. They underperformed expectations in the league, but they are a pretty good team with a legit shot at Elite Eight this year. They will take a step back next year, but should still be top half of the Big Ten and I would expect them to contend for the league title every few years. I think Fran is a surly and petulant guy when he loses, but so are a lot of other coaches.

He has a clause in his contract for his buyout being lower if he wants to go to Minnesota. So he probably doesn’t see it like you would.

If Sparty loses the play-in game, does it still get to pretend it went dancing? I feel like you at least gotta make it to the weekend.

maybe Sparty is a bigger joke.

MSU outside of Breslin hasn’t been all that good. That being said, UCLA’s profile is meh. BYU will offer them a much tougher test

Either MSU wont count it, ending the streak, which would be awesome. Or MSU will count it and, every time the streak is brought up, Michigan Twitter will tirelessly heckle them, which would be hilarious.

I mean it should definitely count. But would definitely be fun to annoy MSU fans with if they lose

Saw this same comment on the Athletic. I’ll take the under…

Seth Davis just posted an article on the Indiana opening. Goes over about 12 candidate and makes a pick… John Beilein. One man’s opinion.

Seth Davis also said 3 separate times on the Bracket Reveal yesterday that he was taking FSU over Michigan and into the Final 4…and then when they revealed their FF, he had 'Bama in. lol

Just saw that the MSU game is at 10pm. Sounds like something one might complain about.

Good! Hate to lose my hate watches.

Got any sourcing on the Juwan part?

Is Seth ever right?

juwan and beilein said so around the time juwan was hired

No. I remember there being discussion about the possibility of Juwan being hired as an assistant at times when there were openings, though I don’t think either said definitively that an offer had been extended or declined. There was no discussion of which I am aware as to Juwan being offered coach-in-waiting, or that anyone in charge would have signed off on that.

"These connections and coincidences are everywhere. Standing casually and waiting for the next interview, Howard strikes up a conversation with me about John Beilein. Then he mentions that Beilein contacted him in 2016, back when Howard was still an assistant coach with the Miami Heat. Beilein kicked the tires, asking if he’d be interested in filling a staff vacancy on the U-M staff left by the departure of Jeff Meyer. Beilein floated the idea of Howard coming on board as a quasi head coach in waiting. Howard politely declined, as the story goes, and Beilein ultimately hired Saddi Washington. "

Beilein has confirmed in other interviews too.

I don’t see Beilein taking the IU job and coaching against Michigan.
