Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

Great thought and I was thinking the same. What they are doing now with the masks is just not effective. Either wear them correctly or just say that everybody is tested so we don’t need to wear masks. To watch Archie Miller coach a whole game with his mask around his chin does not help anybody. I’ve also seen it as the HS and youth level where if they have to wear masks, they can do it without much fuss. Some good solutions here @gtfomycourt.

Fun! Thanks for sharing.

Always good to hear from Beilein. I’m sure he cares deeply about the players he recruited who are still playing big minutes on this team and is genuinely happy and excited for them.

Forward E.J. Liddell Out Indefinitely with non-COVID Illness

Team’s leading scorer and rebounder after first four games of the season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State sophomore forward E.J. Liddell will be out indefinitely with a non-COVID-19 related illness, Ohio State University head coach Chris Holtmann announced today.

“I’m really disappointed for E.J. but we anticipate him returning here hopefully soon,” Holtmann said. “He is doing well and is going to be routinely evaluated by our medical staff.”

The news comes just two days after Liddell, a 6-6 sophomore from Belleville, Ill, helped lead the Buckeyes to a 90-85 win over Notre Dame in the 2020 ACC/Big Ten Challenge with a career-high 19 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. He is leading a balanced Ohio State team with 15.5 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game.

Ohio State hosts Cleveland State on Sunday at Value City Arena. Tip time is 4 p.m. with the Big Ten Network televising. The Buckeyes then open Big Ten play next Wednesday, Dec. 16, on the road against Purdue before a game Saturday at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland against North Carolina.

Best wishes to EJ. Haven’t had a chance to watch OSU this year. How are they set up to deal with him being out? Good depth in the front court or not really?

Well that’s huge news and shocking. Hopefully he’s okay long-term. From a basketball perspective, OSU was already a super thin team. They played basically 7 guys vs ND (actually 10 but 3 combined for a total of 11 minutes). Liddell was their best player vs ND and with Towns still out they don’t have an obvious replacement there. Either gonna have to start Justin Ahrens or Musa Jallow, and neither is replacing Lidell’s production.

In the next 10 days or so they also play 3 games including @Purdue and vs UNC so even in the short term OSU will feel this.

In theory they had a bunch of guys who were oversized 3’s to undersized 5’s in Liddell, Towns, Sueing and Young. But the first two are out now, so depth is an issue.

Seasonal flu? What are the odds you get a bad enough illness to put you out indefinitely but it’s not Covid?

That would be a weird thing to put out a press release about, unless they’re just trying to be really clear that it isn’t Covid. But “really disappointed for him” makes it sound more serious than missing a game or two because he’s feeling under the weather.

Kind of sounds to me like this might be in the purview of mono?

Mono is the only illness I can really ever remember getting announced in a press release really. But COVID maybe changes some of that? Hard to say.

Reading between the lines on OSU reddit, it does sound like mono. They are expecting a long convalescence and a slow recovery of weight/fitness. Would be a huge blow if true.

Ambry Thomas had issues with colitis last year, but not sure if they ever did an official press release for it.

Wow, what a sucky situation. Holtmann’s program has suffered a couple massive blows in back to back years from stuff beyond the realms of normal injury. Hoping for a quick recovery for the kid.

Bit not for the team. I hope everyone there stays healthy and safe and wins no games other than against MSU.

If mono, he should be out for 3 weeks and then ramping back into game shape from there.

Luka is unbelievable

He might score 40 tonight and sat 12 minutes due to foul trouble. He’s made 11 straight shots. Iowa’s up 25 on a top 100 kenpom opponent.

Just to be very clear… Iowa State is not a good team.
