Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

This game tonight has me on edge. Feels like a setup. Turn the bus around and get back to the plane. Live to play another day.

Yeah being better on defense helps but when nothing is working it doesn’t hurt to at least have a functional offense. I wouldn’t necessarily jump right on the Hoggard train and say he automatically fixes things for them though, I think a lot of the confidence there comes from the fact we’ve seen Izzo figure things (way) more often than not, which is fair. I’m just also inclined to think if Hoggard was great he might have been in the rotation earlier than this.

I feel the exact same way, especially with Maryland probably feeling pretty confident coming off beating Wisconsin

My take is that if Hoggard was remotely capable of helping MSU he would have been given a bigger role already. It might marginally improve them because Watts has been so bad, but it was such an obvious answer to try Hoggard over Loyer or the wings at point already if he was decent.

I love the idea of Izzo being forced to rely on a freshman to get things moving over there. But still, I don’t think the bottom falls out.

Didn’t MSU have a PG decommit immediately after AJ Hoggard came on board?

Yep – Jalen Terry.

I don’t know how much he helps this year, but I think the situation would have some clarity going into next year with Terry, Akins and Hoggard. Now they go into next year still without a true PG unless Hoggard shows some things that we haven’t seen from him.

Where would Hoggard play then at the beginning? They had the right idea of Watts moving to PG everybody under the sun was saying he would be given the chance to be PG. Loyer has to be the PG he can’t play any other position. If Langford didn’t play and hung em up you could reasonably come up with Watts/Hoggard at PG/SG and Loyer backing them up along Henry spelling them some at SG.

Watts has been horrible at PG for a month and Loyer playing 20 minutes a game is a ridiculous concept if Hoggard was a quality player at all. Painting this is some revelation made by Izzo that it was “selfish” of him to ask Watts to play the position is hilarious - he’s only doing that because he realized later than everyone else in the state did that 40 minutes of a Watts/Loyer PG rotation is a total disaster.

I am not convinced that Hoggard is more of a PG than Watts unless he proves

Well under normal circumstances at Dec 31st of a given year most teams would have played 13-14 games by now. In this situation with fewer practices/games you’re now in a position where they’re 0-3 in the conference and played 9 games?? You’re forgetting coaches for better or worse need to be more patient than fans or certainly an opposing fan base who obviously have a different perspective.

Jamal Mashburn Jr. has a lot of confidence - taking a long two early in the clock when he’s 0-5 on the day. Clunky offensive game for both WI and MN today. I do like seeing Potter get some good post chances against Robbins.

Gophers look to be about cooked. A couple more minutes and they’ll be ready to serve.

BTN announcer just said you’re crazy if you think MSU is out of the B1G race. Thought you all would like to know

Minnesota strikes me as a team that is tough when they are on (MSU, Iowa) and will fold because of coaching and mindset when it’s not going well (Illinois, Wisconsin)

Might be as simple as Home games v. Road games.

Or good vs bad defenses

I think they could be playing this game in The Barn and once Wisconsin punches them in the face they would fold
