Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

I think it was Keith Kimble. Would have to go back and watch. Courtney Green and Lewis Garrison are also in the crew.

Have yourself a night, Jordan Bohannon.

Heh, Iā€™d be getting lots of ā€œmod approval neededā€ messages.

I already run out of likes during a normal game. I donā€™t even want to imagine the amount of angry likes I would give out.

Well apparently Dylan can get his own posts past the auto-mod

Whatā€™s crazy to me is I guarantee Fran says things way worse than that all the time and gets away with it as long as he isnā€™t just tracking down refs at halftime to give them a piece of his mind

Whenā€™s the last time Michigan was in sole possession of first and State alone in dead last? Imagine itā€™s been a while! Looking forward to Thursday night

Really great win for Rutgers last night without Ron Harper Jr. especially after how quickly the second half went south in Columbus the other day. Harper is the best player for RU, but the most important is either Jacob Young or Myles Johnson.

Especially with Cliff Omoruyi out, keeping Myles Johnson on the floor is a must. He had a bad game (5 points on 2-6, 8 rebounds, meanwhile Trevion Williams went 10-12 with 12 boards) but it still mattered that he was out there for 30 minutes because the alternatives are much worse. Meanwhile Jacob Young is the steadying force on offense, the one who draws attention leading to quality looks. Banking a win against a team like Purdue without our best player and our second-best big man is huge, such a difference between 3-1 and 2-2.

Hereā€™s a question: How many teams would you actually bet finish 11-9 or higher? I was going through my projected end-of-season standings and pretty much stopped after Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Rutgers. Ohio State and Indiana would be next, I guess, but theyā€™ve already got two losses apiece. I could actually see the champion winning 14 games, two teams winning 13, and two winning 12 and then thereā€™s just like seven teams between 8-12 and 10-10. And now I just checked KenPom and heā€™s projecting almost this exact scenario, so I guess Iā€™m not breaking any new ground here.

Purdue had no answer for Geo. Get everyone back and this team could be very difficult to handle in the ncaa tournament. Elite wing shotmakers and a roadrunner at point guard could be nightmarish.

Blows my mind that Pete Nance was the first Big Ten center to outperform Luka Garza. Heā€™s gotta be in the running for Big Ten MIP.

This is still absolute insanity though.

That is wild. Of course, it should be a tech every time, because NCAA hoops shouldnā€™t be the Wild West. But if theyā€™re going to pass on it sometimes, then they should be passing on it every time.

The mind blowing thing about Rutgers right now is that their KenPom O rank has crept ahead of their D rank. They have never even come close to that under Pikiell and he had a long tenure at Stony Brook showing his defenses nearly always better than offense.

I am not sure if their shooting is sustainable, but it is akin to a RichRod football team winning a bunch of defensive slugfests. They are now #17 on KenPom offense with no major additions to the rotation and the loss of their most consistent shooter from last season as well as time missed by Baker and now Harper.

My mind is blown.

Thatā€™s really impressive. Such a steady improvement under Pikiell, heā€™s really built a program from almost nothing. I know Rutgers just gave him an extension but I wonder if he starts catching the eye of bigger programs.

Rutgers has been horrible for a pretty long time. But it could be that bigger program. Itā€™s a good academic school that is now in the premier basketball conference. It has money. And, along with Villanova, it could have a regional recruiting area. I bet he stays.

Several things are starting to fall into place for Rutgers. There is a commitment to sports, with the 7-year buy-in to the B1G Network is over in June 2021. Next, Rutgers signed Pikiell to an extension with a $5 million buyout prior to last season. Pikiell is a northeast guy. His coaching history has him coaching only Ct., NY, and NJ area in the past. Pikiell pushed Rutgers to build a new practice facility with a sports medicine facility as part of it. Rutgers did it to the tune of $120 million. Now Rutgers is looking into making improvements/upgrades to the RAC in the next few years. Rutgers has been doing this without the help of B1G money.

Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois are now 3,4,5 on KenPom.

Literally breaks my brain when I try to claim a frontrunner

The computers would probably make these tiers:

  1. Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois
  2. Michigan, OSU, Rutgers, Indiana
  3. Minnesota, Purdue, PSU, Maryland, NW, MSU
  4. Nebraska

Not sure I would expect those same tiers by seasons end
