2019 - G - Nah'Shon Hyland (VCU Commit)

I am hearing just the opposite about Nunez. I think he will be a strong contributor to this team.

I wish the U-M media would ask Beilein detailed questions about each of the young players and their development throughout the year.

You may be right. I went back through Michigan’s rosters since Beilein arrived and I could not come up with any good examples. In my mind, I was thinking of Darius Morris, X, JMo, DJ as improving a lot after their first year. However, all but DJ played a fair amount as freshmen.

Did Wagner play a lot? I remember him coming on late in the season but not sure he played a lot

Wagner had 6 DNPs in regular season conference play and only one 10 minute conference game.

Then he played 16 against IU in the BTT (Chatman buzzer beater) and 22 minutes against Tulsa in the first four round.

Every other conference or tournament game was <10 minutes.

As a freshman, Wagner averaged 8.6 mins per game for the season but only 4.6 mins per game in the Big 10. He was also 2/12 for the season on 3’s.

Anyone writing off any of the freshmen based on what they did this past season seems premature. None of them other than Iggy really showed anything but we really have no idea how they will develop. I would trust in Beilein’s track record that some of them will develop into very solid players going forward but odds are you aren’t going to hit on all 5 players in a recruiting class unless they are all top 40 kids.

Again, don’t get how people over look attrition potential, transfers, players blowing up and think having an open scholarship is better than a top 50ish guard that can handle and score at three levels with great toughness.

Davis will be given a hand shake, we lose Teske and X. Plus probably a transfer or someone going to pro. Could see Brooks or Nunez transfer as well. Competition breeds best results, no positions will be handed out

I haven’t seen anyone here writing anyone off. Only people saying they don’t expect Nunez to be a major contributor next season.

Yeah, that’s true. I have seen it on some other Michigan boards people already wanting to process Nunez and being down on Johns and DeJulius.

The stats were ugly for them but I don’t think you can put any real stock into Nunez going 1/13 means he can’t shoot or that DeJulius going 6/30 FG’s, 1/15 3’s and 1/6 FT’s means he can’t play. It’s just too small a sample size mostly attained in garbage time with a lineup of all freshmen or walk-ons.

It just seemed like Brandon Johns was thinking what he needed to do out there instead of just playing.

I know there isn’t a ton to go off of (he did provide some nice moments), I am confident that he will produce for us.

Agreed. Johns will be a very good player as soon as he stops thinking and just plays. Hopefully that coincides with him being more comfortable in the program year 2.

I feel like it’s probably not fair to judge Brandon Johns based on his play at the 5 (which was basically all of his play this season). Johns is a 4 in college, was a 4 in high school, and for people to be down on him when he literally switched positions in his first year doesnt seem too fair. If he was playing poorly at the 4 spot then there for sure should be more concern.

Johns shot solidly over 40% from three at the high school level too IIRC (at least for his last season or something). We saw basically none of that last year, but I’d be very surprised to see him not contribute in that area this upcoming season.

Our recruiting class was highly regarded. I don’t think JB forgot how to develop talent. I think we see big things from a few of the soon to be sophomores. I think the best of the bunch might be Castleton with Johns a close 2nd

And also, I see a lot of Nunez hate, but as raw as he is, there is nice potential with that stroke. I’ve heard from some of the team managers that in practice Nunez wins the 3-point shooting contests and has the best stroke on the team. Also heard his D is coming along because of his size/length. I can see how he may fizzle out due to this level of play possibly being too much for him, but man, if he comes around, I think he can be a deadly shooter and really good Beilein type of player.

Hate might be a bit harsh, I would say hopeful!

I’m missing the hate. But I never write off a Beilein player.

Hate was for sure the wrong word for me to use, but on either this thread or another, I’ve seen a lot of people counting him out. I think he can eventually make a big impact and help get our shooting numbers up. I love what im hearing from people around the program lately, it seems very positive. I also think if somehow he were to be ready by the fall, a lot of our problems would be solved (shooting, depth at the 2). But anyways, ā€œHateā€ was the wrong word. Perhaps I should have said ā€œLow confidenceā€ or something

No worries…lets hope he finds his game! One summer with the Sandman can make a world of difference. The jump shot all starts in the legs!

Completely agree, especially about the Sandman. Also saw Nunez at church next to Iggy the other day, and if Iggy is 6’8" then Nunez may be up to 6’6". Great size there
