2016 Point Guard Recruiting (Xavier Simpson)

I for one would like Matt to come back. I think people are wrong in claiming that he ever trashed John Beilein. He just had a (very) different view of how to leverage and sustain success in recruiting – a view that wouldn’t be unusual on the forums of most other tier-one basketball schools. I don’t recall him being a vocal critic of in-game coaching or player development at Michigan. He just remembers the good old days when Michigan didn’t have to concede size, talent, or athleticism to anybody, and he wouldn’t lower his standards just because the people running the show are refreshingly honorable and decent. After Dylan, he was also probably the best source of new player intel on here.

Well, “the good old days” of recruiting featured Ed Martin, so I don’t see us returning to that model.

They also featured countless awesome players who had absolutely nothing to do with Martin.

Totally agree windsor, he always seemed to have an inside scoop and some good scoting reports

Lucas has a really nice feel for the game, and looks to have good handles and quickness, if not verticality. Preferable to Jermaine Jackson in my opinion due to better size, handles, and passing, even if Jackson looks to have a bit more polish in his shot and finishing. Still would much prefer Quentin Goodin to either of them – he’s in a different class athletically.

Say Windsor, I assume you read Rumeal Robinson’s “off the cuff” comments a few years back about the 1989 team, right? Suffice it to say Frieder ran a fairly loose ship. If we assume Fisher merely picked up where Frieder left off - which is what those comments seem to suggest - I’d say Michigan was like every other high profile basketball program during the 1980s/1990s, and now. In other words, we played the recruiting game.

From personal experience, I can tell you that while Juwan Howard was never linked to Ed Martin, I did observe him driving a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee around campus when I went to school there, and I assume his family from the South Side of Chicago wasn’t paying for it.

Point is, the elite recruits in any era have generally gotten “taken care of” in one way or another for a LONG time now, and we had plenty of elite recruits back in the 1980s and early 1990s, many of whom were not linked to Ed Martin. Rumeal’s comments certainly suggest those guys were, nonetheless, treated pretty well.

I think the Martin scandal ushered in a new way of doing business at Michigan. It’s not impossible to get five star kids, but it’s difficult given some of these constraints. Of the “countless awesome” players you refer to, how many have come post Ed Martin?

Umm, my last comment was about the relative skills and talents of Tejon Lucas, Jermaine Jackson Jr and Quentin Goodin, so I’m not sure what’s prompting this now, unless you’re just trying to discredit a legitimate point about our PG targets.

Call me sentimental, but I’m not going to throw all the players who played for Frieder and Fisher under the bus. You act as though Michigan is the only program that allows itself to be constrained by the rules, a view as unrealistic as it is arrogant. Sean Miller is an example of a guy who can bring in 5-star recruits by the boatload but is generally considered to have high ethical standards – coming as he did on the heels of major sanctions. But you’ll probably cite the weather as the reason kids flock to Zona.

Anyway, very curious to hear people’s views on Lucas vs Jackson.

Another name on the radar… Mike Bibby Jr.

Just for the fun of it, I want Bibby

How old is Cassius Winston? Anybody know?

DX On Cassius
Behind a 21-point, nine-assist effort in the third place game, Detroit-native Cassius Winston led the Nike Global Challenge in assists per 40 minutes (11.09) and Pure Point Rating (9.42). He showcased excellent vision, creativity and timing as a passer to go along with his ability to play at different speeds. The 6’ 2” lead guard can play pick and roll, distribute on the move, and really push tempo in transition.

Winston didn’t quite have elite burst as he’s playing at a heavier weight than he has in the past (weighed in at 194 at 2015 Nike Skills Academy after weighing 173 the year before) but he’s still fairly shifty and was able to get into the lane and use his strength to finish through contact – 59.3% inside the arc. Winston still has room to improve as an outside shooter as he shoots a bit of a push shot with a low release point, but he displays nice touch despite the less than stellar shooting mechanics. There’s no doubt that Cassius Winston helped himself with his impressive playmaking and finishing ability in front of a handful of big-time college coaches.

They list his birthday as 02/28/1998.

I’ve seen a couple people on Twitter saying beilein has been watching Pritchard. I didn’t follow his recruitment prior to his Oklahoma commitment. Was there much mutual interest previously?

Was on the radar last summer as well, didn’t invest much time in watching film or anything.

Respectfully for the Goodin detractors, these game highlights don’t look good to you?

Reminds me of MAAR a bit.

I really hope that actively commentating mother is Goodin’s. I have sneaky feeling it would make for some great antics during a game

I really like goodin how serious is he? I also like Lucas’s game

I’ve always gotten the sense with Goodin that he pretty clearly knew where he ranked in the PG prospect pool of initially offered 2016 PGs (Winston/Thornton, then Goodin). With Thornton off the board, and Winston not a sure thing, they may be giving more attention to him than previously. I do for some reason think Lucas is the first backup to Winston at this point however. I haven’t watched enough film of Lucas to form any opinion, but I like Goodin’s a lot.

A tad better athlete than MAAR

I certainly would not look down my nose at a commitment from Goodin.
