Personally, I'm leaning more toward the athlete in this instance given the timeframe and roster. JMO
Curious what you mean by this. Michigan is going to pair its point guard with a plus athlete and five-star wing guard so just curious what you mean.
JB can correct me if I’m wrong…but I think he just prefers guards that are more inclined to finish at the rim off penetration as opposed to a jumpshooting guard.
I prefer someone who can shoot at Michigan, with a high IQ as a PG. Neither of those two things come naturally to Goodin.
Shooting concerns have some merit, although he’s not a bad shooter. But what have you seen that reflects that IQ doesn’t come naturally to Goodin? He is an excellent passer that draws the help defender and finds people for open layups/dunks.

Mostly personal preference, but also:
a) that 5 star wing could leave early, get injured, or get in foul trouble. I think we need more guys that can attack the hoop, get their own shot, etc.
b) a 2016 PG will play (most likely) 1 year behind Walton. There’s time to develop.
…that also means we could take a PG in 2017 as a “Spike” type guy.
c) I view Winston as high floor/low ceiling…I’d rather take a risk and get a high ceiling guy. I envision if we don’t get more guys that can create, we become too easy to guard. Less need for help rotations means hands are up on shooters faster.
d) I also like a PG that’s good on defense via athletic ability/size.
I like Winston and I’ll be happy with him. But he’s not my preference at this point.
I’d prefer Winston, Goodin works too, and then my order of preference would be Aiken, Walker and Ramsey. If we took any of these guys and then added Jackson in 2017 (and Huerter as a reclassified SG), I think the backcourt would be strong for awhile.
Since there are a lot of people who would take Winston over Goodin citing the value of elite IQ and shooting vs size and athleticism, it makes me wonder how Winston compares to say, other elite PGs known principally for IQ and shooting like Tyler Ulis or Jalen Brunson? Neither of those guys are athletic freaks and Ulis is squarely in the pint-size category. Does Winston bring their level of IQ and/or shooting? Or is he a notch below? If the latter, I am still in the Goodin camp.

Isaiah Briscoe is not overly athletic either, maybe on Brunson’s level; but can really get it done. I don’t know where Winston ranks against those guys, but he’s certainly not a Brundidge type, and I think after hanging out with Sanderson for a summer, he’d be fine. The guy I really like is still Bruce Brown even though he’s technically a combo. He’s still got a nice handle and can really dish as well as score from some of the video I’ve seen.
Update with Brown, no mention of UM. Says playing time most important factor in picking school. Contrary to what some think, also thinks that schools recruiting him are being upfront and honest in terms of him being a priority type recruit, or whether they envision him as a backup guard.
FWIW… Brown seemed to give slightly different lists to everyone he talked to in Lexington. Not really sure what was up with that but makes it hard to gauge. I would certainly say he’s not very far along in the recruiting process though.
Could definitely see him choosing Oregon or UConn, and imagine he’d be reticent about competing with Briscoe and Ulis, and/or having to slide over to the three. I didn’t think MSU was a big player for him, but on reflection it seems possible that he could take most of Nairns’ minutes. He should be aware that Izzo will do everything in his power to clip his wings and keep him past his sell-by date. And Crean is just… Crean.
Would love to have him (he can flat out score the ball and will be ready to play from day one) but hard to see it with DW Jr and LeVert already eating up the lion’s share of minutes at guard. That said, as a guard whose draft spot is unusually hard to gauge, he could definitely benefit from the Beilein bump, and he may well realize this. Great to see that Michigan is still on his list.
Does anyone know if U-M is still pursuing him hard (with the aforementioned guard situation and the 2016 class pretty much full)?
“He visited Kentucky, he just visited Oregon, he’s thinking about visiting Michigan and a couple of others. Will he do that? He’s not sure. Right now, it’s a two-and-a-half horse race, Michigan being the half. If they get the visit, you have to consider them a full-fledged threat. Handicapping it, how do you not pick Kentucky out of those three right now? But John Beilein has had a lot of success and Dana Altman’s doing a lot of great things up at Oregon, and they’ve got a Canadian up there already in Dylan Brooks.”
