Zak Irvin or GR3

IMO - Zak Iis now doing things that we never saw, but always hoped we would see from GR3.
Looking forward to watching Zak the next two years. GO BLUE!

Depends on the functionality, if you want a true wing…no question its Zak. If you want a baseline finisher, GR3 hands down.

Zak, by necessity after the injuries, has expanded all facets of his game this last month. Not sure he would have had the same amount of opportunities to have the ball in his hands without them. It has hastened his progression rapidly as a potential creator going forward. I’m most impressed with his desire to rebound lately. Lord knows this team still hasn’t learned how to box out worth a crap. A killer today. We’ll need Zak on the glass next year, bad.

I will be that guy since you just had to say next two years. That is not promised, I can see Zak Blowing up big next season and leaving for the NBA. I feel he is and has always been that skilled, just took a minute for it to kick in.

I think he’s a great college player, but for some reason I just don’t see him projecting well in the NBA. Anyone else agree? Maybe I’m wrong or just seeing it differently.

Not saying he won’t play in the league, but IMO it’s going to be after he graduates.

I just don’t see him playing in the league. Not quite big enough, not quite fast enough, and doesn’t have the best form. It goes in a lot, but he does not have the best form, which leads to inconsistency. Could be all big ten, but question the next level for Zak.

Love him hitting the glass the last few games. Looks like he has the “will to win”.

Functionality? What? Finish what? Ally oops from Trey Burk or DW?
Yes, he can jump and slam. So What!
I’m sure there are hundreds (if not thousands) that can do that on playgrounds all across the USA.

I wanted to see GR3 use his God given abilities and athleticism to put the ball on the floor, get to the rack and finish! Seldom did he do that. Nor did he drive and dish like Irvin is doing now. Nor did he hit the glass with the determination Zak did the last few games. I’m taking Zak!

GR3=Soft Irvin=Determination to improve

I take the Harbaugh.
I’m not into comparing two very different players and ripping on one to make a point, (rightly or wrongly), that one is better than the other.

Two different players? How so?
Irvin 6’6" 215 lbs
GR3 6’6" 220 lbs

I will say this in GR3 defense, he was not pushed to carry the team like Zak was. Maybe if there were injuries to last years team and GR3 needed to step up, he would have.

The bottom line is, he wasn’t hungry enough. And Stauskas was!

And now Zak is taking the bull by his horns.

I wonder if a better comp would be irvin v. Stauskus? Both were predominantly three pt specialists as freshman (granted Stauskus did show signs of a more diverse game) and both developed their games into shooters AND creators their soph years. Obviously it took irvin longer to get there and he didn’t get as far, but their development did follow similar tracks.

So basically you just reiterated what I initially posted

Zak because wing is a real position and baseline finisher is just one aspect of a real position.

I disagree on every one of your points. Even while in High School, my most favorable comparison that came to mind watching Zak was and is to this day Voshon Lenard of Minnesota. Zak happens to be bigger and just as fast, not quite the dead eye shooter yet, but I can see that coming down the line. I will take it a step further and say Zak, IMO is a better prospect than Stauskas.

Stauskas did everything better than Irvin from an offensive standpoint, and frankly, it’s not all that close. Neither one of them are good athletes, so defense was always going to be an issue for both from an NBA standpoint.

Your point has some merit, but shooting is only one aspect of a real position as well.

I agree, Zak’s size (height and broad shoulders/frame) and strength will be a real asset in the NBA. Stauskas’s lack of size hurts a lot when he doesn’t have the explosiveness to compensate.

double post

Luckily he can do more than shoot now. At an NBA level? We’ll see. But he could have two years to develop it or get his shooting to a point of consistency.

Ha! Me too. Something about their shoulders, immediately drew me to a resemblance physically, between Voshon Leonard and Zak Irvin.

I screwed up the quote thingy, but my above reply was directed toward Webdog and his Zak/Voshon comparison. I thought I was the only one.
