Well playing without Wagner is going to be a big adjustment for them. He was such a game changer as a 5 who was a threat to shoot from 3 and put the ball on the floor. He changed the way teams defended us and opened up a lot of opportunities for everyone else.
Rahkman was also such a solid and steady player. This is going to be a very new and different team. Really only X and Matthews have played big minutes in college before.
I think we also underestimate how much of a transition it will be for most of the freshmen. Iggy may be the exception while the others take more time to develop. I think some people assume DeJulius can not only be the backup PG right away but also challenge Simpson. I know Brooks really struggled last year but odds are he’s going to be further along than DeJulius at least early in the season and who knows, maybe all year.
There are always lots of questions that we are unsure of going into the season. There certainly were the last 2 years and most of them were answered positively. I would expect this to be a much better team in November than they are right now and then much better in Jan and ultimately in March. Will that be good enough to contend for a Big 10 title or another nice tourney run, I have no idea.
Irony here is that there’s nothing published about the game at any of the Detroit papers… Shea Patterson is speaking in public so that goes on the backburner.
I see the free throw issues have not improved… the turnovers are sooo uncharacteristic for a Beilein team… wonder if they would’ve had 19 of them if Beilein was on the trip or if you can solely chalk it up to lack of practice and experience
Ahh, the life of a blog owner… One week ago you’re tempering high expectations about the team and now you’ve got to say this in the opposite direction.
Turnover stats are pretty meaningless. It’s a given M will be one of the better teams in protecting the ball. I will be shocked if they aren’t.
About the only conclusion I’m drawing is the team currently has 3 shot hunters.
It’s August. No Beilein. A million unknowns. There’s zero precedence to take an exhibition game serious. I’d like to find the one person last August who predicted defense would lead us to another Final Four.
Also, shout out to the Duke and Kentucky fans who sold me their Final Four seats so cheap last year. Congrats on your early season exhibition wins.
