Posted a new article on the NBA Draft

It covers the difference between being selected in the 1st vs. 2nd rounds, but also gets into the hidden benefits of extra years in college. It’s posted over on Brian’s site as a diary.

May I link that here, or is that not done on this forum?

(I think this belongs in Michigan basketball, as so many of our kids have faced difficult decisions related to this stuff)

I would just go ahead and link it. Or just copy and paste. Might have to re-format a bit, but you don’t have any tables, just images so shouldn’t be that bad.

Okay - with apologies if this is verboten - would love it if people checked this out: http://mgoblog.com/diaries/first-round-why-it-matters

My article suggests 1) that 1st round picks enjoy longer NBA careers than their 2nd round counterparts and 2) that, with the exception of former top 30 recruits, if you end up in the 2nd round or undrafted, it is much better to have four years in a college program under your belt.

Mainly, my article punctures the idea that staying in school is always a bad thing.

Ideally, it might be great to post the article itself over here (although I’d have to check with mgoblog for permission), as I love this site.

But for now, please have a look. A lot of research went into this piece, and I think I really may be on to something.

Good stuff JS. I appreciate the time that must have taken. I will read it a little closer and provide my thoughts on your work when time allows. A lot of stuff to digest!

Thanks, Matt!

Really good work here…really hope Caris gets a glimpse of this article. Its one thing to just state that you get more money in your initial contract by going in the first round, but the charts really depict the disparity in career length, and hence money as well.

Thanks! This one took a lot of work. Still playing with the spreadsheets, but may take a day or two away from it. Really interesting result - don’t know if you saw this - that I just posted about former top 30 underclassmen. They do seem to do quite well, for one reason or another. Definitely the result I expected, so that was neat to see it come out that way.
