Michigan Players in the NBA

Yeah Maxi has proven himself better in every aspect. It’s worth noting he came over at 26 as a pretty refined player.

It Mo can’t make the ball go in the basket, he won’t catch anywhere.

The Heat supposedly have interest in Moe. Would reunite him with Duncan which would be pretty cool.

Our list of topics here is dwindling. Until further notice, Mo Wagner, Ignas Brazdeikis, and Glenn Robinson III are removed from the update list - there isn’t any current talk that I can find linking any to a current acquisition (a few different blogs have theorized about picking Mo up, but no actual reporting to suggest it’s happening.

  • Four weeks ago, Jordan Poole was absolutely molten, and cooled off two weeks ago…unfortunately, that cool down is continuing. In the 8 games since our last updates, he’s 38.7% from the floor, and 25% from three. There’s not a ton going on with his game other than the shooting - he doesn’t rebound terribly much, and he is sporadically picking up assists in bunches to only have a few games following where he doesn’t collect one. Steph has gone absolutely nuts for over a week at this point, and most of his baskets are off assists, but as usual, it seems to largely be Draymond throwing those passes. Poole’s PT is secure for this season, but his shooting is slowly arcing towards “unacceptable” again.

  • DJ Wilson continues to get minutes in Houston, consistently, but there honestly isn’t much to say here. He’s at 28% from the floor, 19% from three over the last two weeks. Sometimes he rebounds ok? Houston isn’t the most functional ecosystem, it’s not as if he’s playing with good player, but playing badly for a terrible team isn’t really going to recommend him for a future gig.

  • In better news, Caris Levert is scoring. He’s scoring 21 ppg in the last 2 weeks, on 46% from the field. He’s still not terribly efficient - the three-point shot is still not that good (27% in the span), but his two-point game has been good. The Pacers don’t really have a guy with more on-ball juice than him, so he’s definitely raising the floor of their offense. I still don’t think he’s a primary option for a good team - he’s more of a innings eater, a guy that CAN create offense if you’re lacking that, but not necessarily an elite option doing so.

  • Trey Burke is now out of the Mavericks rotation, and has played 16 minutes in 2 weeks.

  • Tim Hardaway is also on a bit of a cold spell (39%/30% from 3) in the last two weeks. Generally, I don’t find this concerning on the macro level, and his usage levels suggest Rick Carlisle does not either. His season-long shooting had been a bit hotter than normal for him, so this stretch just pulls him down to roughly what he’s been doing since he came to Dallas.

  • There is only one number anyone cares about for Duncan Robinson - he’s shooting 44.6% from three over the past two weeks. His season-long true shooting sits “only” at 63%.

Sounds like DJ Wilson is a tank commander.

I’d be rooting once again for a Miami/Dallas finals.

Ive recently started following these updates as I’ve realized how much recruits care about Juwan’s NBA-type program and how pro it is. I can’t help but think that the list is going to get much longer in the next few years.

Can’t wait til Michigan has enough NBA players to put on one team in a video game.

I tried doing this on 2K18 but I had to use all-time players and still only ended up with 12 guys. Built a similar MSU team and got annihilated trying to play against them.

Don’t think that’ll be necessary in a few years!

I actually did that on 2K20 when Beilein was the Cavs coach. Had Beilein as the HC and I think the roster consisted of:

Burke, Walton, Hardaway, LeVert, GR3, Duncan, Mo, Stauskas, Wilson, Crawford, Poole, Iggy and Udoh.

Only 13 guys so it just barely counted. The team was absolutely terrible though.

Right now, I would go:

PG: Levert, Burke
SG: Hardaway, Poole
SF: Duncan, Franz
PF: DJ, ???
C: Moe, ???

Looks like it’ll have to be 2022 to fill out the roster with some big men.

It really is amazing to see all of these Beilein guys clinging to a tenuous spot in the NBA because they suck at shooting. Crazy to me…

Stauskas, Moe, DJ, Burke, Poole, Iggy…all struggling because they can’t shoot consistently. GR3 maybe too. Even Levert, that has some juice in the league is struggling to shoot.

Yeah it’s crazy that the only Beilein players consistently knocking down threes in the NBA are Duncan and Hardaway…and Hardaway wasn’t even that good a three point shooter in college.

And Duncan shoots at a better clip in the pros than college.

A former player (Stu?) mentioned that JB could be a bit of a stickler about shooting form. Maybe he needed to be a bit more hands-off at that.

Isn’t the balance of the data (led by Stauskas) in the other direction though?

Yes, I think you nailed it.

Trey was doing well from deep last year and in the postseason. Granted it was a small sample size but he was well above 40%

This year, he’s around the league average at .362.

Yup. Since leaving Utah, Burke is at 38% from three point range over 5 years and 558 attemps including the playoffs. Hard to say he’s not consistently knocking down threes. It’s other areas of his game that keep him from consistent minutes at this point in his career, not shooting. Even if he’s “only” league average so far this year.

If we’re thinking of the same story that was Stu talking about a time when Beilein got into him.

He was an underclassman and had a good game, in practice he missed a 3 and Beilein stopped to correct something about his form, Stu said or did something to ignore it because he thought his shot didn’t need correcting, and then he got reamed by Beilein.

I don’t recall the point of that story being that Beilein being too hands-on. Of course we could be thinking of different stories

This discussion takes me back to my late 1990s NBA Live days when I’d make a team with Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Glen Rice, Terry Mills, Loy Vaught, Maurice Taylor and Robert Traylor. Maybe others I’m forgetting. So many big men and forwards, I think I had Terry Mills at the 2 because he could should threes . I remember being happy Jamal Crawford made the game at some point so I had a guard to play with.
