Michigan Players in the NBA

NBA players are so talented. Yes, a lot of the games seem boring but these guys can really go off.

I agree! They also remind me of Roy Tarpleyā€™s finest moments as a pro.

Last night, Trey+THJ made a combined 15/21 3s for the Mavs. Iā€™m sure this is a record of some kind for former college teammates in an nba game, but Im stumped as to how to research the record status of something like this. Whatā€™s the best stat resource for combining parameters like this to generate a list of leaders for something this specific?

I think itā€™s to raise awareness for the pod, actually.

I asked Duncan a question about Mo and he gave a very funny story:

So many. Mo and I were roommates at Michigan and is still one of my closest friends to this day.

One of my favorites is when he was on his official visit and I was his host. He came during the summer so it was pretty quiet on campus. We went over to a teammates house just to hang, nothing crazy and somebody offered him a beer. He was like 18 at the time so I told him ā€œjust so you know, donā€™t feel any pressure to drink thatā€. He snapped me a look and said ā€œAre you kidding me? Iā€™m germanā€¦ This sh*t is like apple juice to me.ā€

Back in the before times, when I used to travel for work a lot, Iā€™d be in the Frankfurt airport at 900 a.m. off a red-eye and craving coffee, but in the restaurants thereā€™d always be quite a few beers on the tables instead. Liquid breadā€¦

So to further update our crew:

Ignas Brazdeikisā€™ status has not changed - he is on the fringe of the Knicksā€™ NBA roster, having played 4 minutes in three games. He missed the 1 shot he took, he got to the line once. Heā€™s in that purgatory where I wonder if the better move for him would be to go back to the G League where he can at least play.

Last time, I noted to the consternation of a few, that Jordan Poole was still arguably the worst rotation player in the NBA. The good news is that this is no longer the caseā€¦because heā€™s no longer in the rotation for the Warriors. In the Warriorā€™s last 5 games, he only played in a 30+ point win (the ball did go in the basket in his garbage time appearance - shooting 2/3 from three). Mychal Mulder has taken his spot in the rotation (as I speculated) and is shootingā€¦a lot, if not well. This is still a battle Jordan can win.

As I noted last time, Mo Wagner was not in the Wizards rotation as the team preferred to go with a rotation of Thomas Bryant and Robin Lopez at the 5. I guessed that Robin Lopezā€™s defensive struggles (the only reason he is there is to play defense) might give Mo an opportunity. It turns out, we wonā€™t get a chance to test that, as Thomas Bryant blew his ACL and is out for the year, giving Mo another crack at playing time. In the first game following Bryantā€™s injury, Mo showed all he is, for better and for worse - he scored 13 points on 7 shots (good!) and fouled out in 19 minutes of play (bad). Defense, and his inability to not foul has been him limiting factor thus farā€¦weā€™ll see if he can make progress.

Iā€™m not really sure what to say about DJ Wilson. Last time I said I THOUGHT he was in the rotation, but wasnā€™t sure because 3 of Milwaukeeā€™s 4 games were wild 30+ point blowouts. He then didnā€™t see the floor in a close game, played in another blowout, sat for threeā€¦but then was the second man off the bench in their last contest. He may not be in the rotation? Or he wasnā€™t but now he is? Regardless, he played well in his return to competitive minutes, scoring 12 points on 9 shots, and making a pair of threes. Heā€™s now 7/15 from three, which is a stat that will be something of a bell-weather for him.

Caris has been on a roller-coaster. He scored 24 points on 36 shots across three games after my last update, coming off the bench. Then, he was moved into the starting lineup (as Kyrie sat), and now has 4 straight 20+ point games, including a 43 point on 23 shot master-piece. Heā€™s not always efficient (22 points on 25 shots against Philly), but heā€™s still carrying a massive usage despite sharing the floor with bigger stars recently, and heā€™s stuffing the stat sheet with 4 rebounds and 6 assists a game. With Dinwiddie out for the year, his role wonā€™t get smaller.

Glenn Robinson is getting a few more minutes a game as he is one of the pair of players swallowing the injured Tyrese Halliburtonā€™s minutes at shooting guard, in addition to his normal responsibilities. Heā€™s doing fine - he is what he is, a low usage defensive specialist who might hit a three if you pass it to him. Heā€™s brought that usage all the way up to 13%.

You would be forgiven if you were curious if the headlines were years old when you read that Trey Burke (29 points on 13 shots) and Tim Hardaway (36 on 20) lead a team to victory - but no, that was two days ago. These guys are both secure. Hardaway is out-doing the mini-resurrection that started when he got traded to Dallas - heā€™s now at 44% from 3 and a 61% true shooting. Iā€™m not sure either is sustainably necessarily, but heā€™s still a starter on one of the NBAā€™s better teams, and a very productive one. Burke was clearly the one whose career was in greater jeopardy - after a mostly lost year where he was continuously cut, he landed on the Mavericks and had a phenomenal bubble. A player whose work ethic and commitment (to not partying) has frequently been in question, Trey has pushed the bubble performance forward. His 62% true shooting may not last, but heā€™s established himself as the Mavā€™s primary backup 2 guard and often shoulders the scoring load for the 2nd unit (less so the shot creation, as heā€™s generally playing with Jalen Brunson). The one bummer is that these two donā€™t play together that often, as Trey is often spelling Timmy.

Duncan Robinson is ā€œonlyā€ shooting 39% from 3. Not much to say here. Heā€™s good.

Thanks for this summary! Appreciate the concise review for those of us who follow the NBA erratically. Crawford finally retired, right?

I thought Walton was going to stick on someoneā€™s bench. Bummed he didnā€™t.

We will see what happens with Poole and Iggy. I know that they got solid initial contracts and can probably stick around the league for a whileā€¦but the what-if of them both deciding to leave and the butterfly effect on Beilein leaving and Juwan being hired will be a long time inflection point in the programs history.

Seconded ā€“ really appreciate the thorough updates on our guys there!

ha, saw that on reddit. well played.

Cassius Winston made his NBA debut last night for Washington. He had an assist in two minutes. Maybe it was a pass to Wagner

One addendum: with Josh Richardson and Jalen Brunson both in the Covid protocol, Burke is going to see a lot more PT for the next two weeks.

Bummer. Levert getting moved.
