Don’t forget to cheer on the FAB SOPHS tomorrow against Texas in the elite 8. We need them in the final 4 too.
Exercised some demons today by beating UMD after losing to them in the 2011 title game.
Let’s exercise some more by beating Denver to avenge 2022.
Have to imagine it would be the first time a school had men’s hoops, women’s hoops, and hockey all in the final four of their respective tournaments.
I wonder if UCONN ever did? That might be the only possibility but I’m not sure their hockey is any good.
They’ve made their first two tourney appearances the last two seasons, but no Frozen Fours
This season for Softball seems to be one where they’re finding their footing. They’re 24-14 overall but 4-8 in B1G play. Part of the losing record is because they’ve had series’ against the top two teams (Washington & Nebraska) in the conference standings.
For the first time since I’ve been following them closely, they don’t really have an ace pitcher and there’s been some mixing and matching going on in the infield. Defensively, they’re averaging 0.8 errors a game which is up a tick from last year.
With that said, yesterday they did something pretty incredible. They came back from being down 9-0 after 2 innings at Northwestern to win 11-9. Both Jenissa Conway and Lauren Putz went yard to fuel the comeback. And Freshman Grayson Lamarche really settled in in relief, only giving up 1 run in 5 1/3 innings.
They have won their last two series but need to keep pushing to make sure they make the BTT. They have 12 more B1G games remaining. Only 12 teams make the BTT and they’re currently vying for that 12th spot. 6-6 probably gets them in. Luckily, UCLA and Oregon are not on the regular season schedule this year.
SIDE NOTE: I’m only just noticing now that USC doesn’t have a softball team. Wow.
Meanwhile, the Baseball team is doing a little better in conference play than their neighbors. They’re 5-7 in conference and have won their last two B1G series, including winning 2 of 3 against #15 Oregon. I don’t follow baseball nearly as closely as softball but it looks like we’re still a ways away from the Bakich era.
I’m still p*ssed that the southern/warmer weather teams have such an advantage over the midwest and east. If they pushed the start of the season back a month to 6 weeks, I think it would level the playing field quite a bit.
Baseball currently has an RPI of 40 which would be right on the tournament bubble. They’ve also played the toughest conference schedule so far with three of the four series against UCLA, Nebraska and Oregon. The three wins in those series plus the season opener vs Oregon St. (RPI #6) are helping a ton. If they can avoid dropping mid week games against bad teams (already have losses vs CSUN, Pepperdine, Oakland) they should be in a good position for the rest of the season.
The schedule also really lightens up going forward. Like, WarrenNolan (which I think does their projections based off RPI) predicts a 22-4 finish which would get the record to 38-18 (19-11) but only bump the RPI from 40 to 38.
That’s good to hear. Thanks for some insight!
The Hockey team has next! Let’s get another Natty!
The hockey team has its own NC drought to vanquish. Football, now basketball……tag, you’re it Hockey!
