Ugh, you’re probably right and that makes me sad.
Cooley worked under the search firm lead at BC and is buds with Warde. This gonna be quite the look to the fan base if Howard doesn’t get hired and looks like service to please people so they can get their guy.
Will support him, of course, but the pressure will be there Day one
How does “talent developer from a football school” result in “recruiter from a hoity-toity private New England liberal arts school”? Did Warde just borrow Jim Harbaugh’s playcalling dartboard?
Yes, I think you’re overthinking it. The report that Cooley has been hired, by all reputable accounts, is false.
Things can change in 12-24-48 hours and maybe Cooley ends up with the job. That’s why UM media are qualifying their information with “as of now.” That still doesn’t mean the report tonight from the Providence radio station is accurate.
For example, Mickey Callaway is the NY Mets manager, for now, and management is saying he’s safe…doesn’t mean they can’t change their mind and fire him in a week. But it’s an accurate report to say the Mets have not hired a manager to replace Callaway, as of now.
I’ll just say this as someone who has watched videos of Cooley all day. I am not sure I have ever seen a more engaging coach. If he gets the job, I have no doubt he will win over a ton of sidewalk type fans in the press conference.
I think assuming Cooley knows that tweet exists is a leap
Its not that tweet, his name has been out there as a primary candidate since Friday and he was interviewed today. I dont think he would have even interviewed had he not thought he had a really good shot at the job and wanted it. Cooley is not a guy that has a history of involving himself in job openings.
Yeah, haven’t heard him linked publicly to a lot of other jobs. Supposedly turned down approaches from “Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Georgetown and others” recently.
I don’t hate Cooley. He can absolutely fit, recruit & win at Michigan.
I don’t love his offense. Don’t love S.Smarts O either. What’s Howard going to run? I just can’t stand when folks hop on the “I hate everything we’re doomed” wagon without a wee bit of research, then proclaim Howard as THE candidate. A little devils advocate I suppose.
Providence isn’t a power. They aren’t even Butler or Xavier or Nova or even GTown.
Smart/Yach as my #1 preference. But Cooley doesn’t mean bottom feeder. Both must adjust offensively to achieve maximum results/success. Similar to what Beilein did on D throughout his tenure.
He got a preacher vibe
I know that as a private school Providence doesn’t have to release the info, but is there any speculation as to what the buyout figure might be?
Right, I think it’s beyond speculation that he applied for the job, and thus wants it. I’m not sure there is anything for him to shoot down at this point.
Not sure on the figure, but there’s this:
In part due to interest from other schools, PC signed Cooley to a 10-year contract extension in 2016. According to the school’s latest tax form, Cooley earned $2.6 million and sources confirmed he will eclipse $3 million over the next few years. The deal does include a buyout provision that the coach would have to pay upon his exit. At the time of his new deal, Cooley told The Journal, “when we took the job in March 2011, I said this is the only place I ever wanted to be. I want to make a commitment to the school that that wasn’t a lie. That’s real talk.”
To put it politely, Providence is essentially the Rutgers of the Big East. If Cooley wasn’t there, they’d be at the bottom every year.
If not Rutgers, maybe the Big East’s PSU…
Imagine PSU or Rutgers winning 20+ games 4 seasons in a row, landing top 50 kids and claiming their coach is garbage.
Providence did make it to a final four and elite eight and five tourny appearances in mid 80s to mid 90s, so lets not act like theres no history there
Reading the tea leaves… I think it’s going to be Cooley and at this point the Howard interview is just to assuage the fans.
And with that, U of M basketball dies once again.
This is inaccurate
I dont think so. I think another poster nailed it. AD said he wanted a HC with experience. I think this interview was to satisfy that statement. Really the job is Juwan’s to turn down. You want to make a splash with the fanbase, boosters and Alum sign Howard. Give him the chance to do something special at Michigan.
I will say that Webb’s use of language describing Cooley as an “ascending target” is incredibly ominous.
Compare them to the other Big East programs.
