Game 3: Ball State at Michigan Open Thread

Austin Davis can’t handle anyone 1 on 1. He’s a putrid defender in every aspect

Might be nice to give our starting five minus Davis some extended run in the second half for a UCF team that will be no pushover.

Lol. Message boards are not for the rational.

We’re seeing the fundamental problem with the “find minutes for everyone” approach in some of the 2020 roster speculation thread. When you try to play everyone, your good players don’t play enough and no one gets a rhythm. Lotta good things to take from that half but there’s no rhyhtm or identity on offense

Bad last 7-9 minutes, but I don’t think the D is as bad as it looks. Lots of new pieces playing a new system. Ever notice Chaundi out picking up his man near midcourt? He’s the only guy doing that. Lots of work needed by Juwan & staff to get these guys on same page, but plenty of defensive potential when they do.

I’m not happy about the rotation, but it makes a lot of sense. He is trying to get meaningful reps in for multiple people and lineups because you never know when/if/how COVID is going to ravish your team. I’m not saying I agree with the rotation, but Howard is being hella conservative. If he thinks it’s going to help during B1G season, I’m not going to be mad about it.

How about on defense? They went from tenacious and coherent to fast asleep and breakdown after breakdown.

Also not that much of a hot take. I think this team can be good. But if they keep spending time not playing their best lineups it might take awhile.

I’m only saying he has matchup potential in those games because he’ll match big-on-big. Whether he’s a + or - depends. But at least it’s a matchup. He can’t stay in front of smaller bigs. Hunter/Brandon should have most of the minutes at Center

I am really disappointed by Johns so far. Really hoping/hoped he could make a leap this year and this looks like the same player from March.

As much as I like the idea of Johns as a small-ball five, he had no idea what was going on for the 2-3 possessions that he was in that role.

Part of that is probably that he’s still trying to learn two spots though.

He has played great first two games

The good:

  • Franz burst at the start
  • Livers being his typical productive efficient self
  • Mike Smith creating
  • HD 6 & 6 in a half

The bad:

  • Auto-bench
  • weird rotations/subs in general (Zeb before Johns? TWill last guy off the bench? Why so much Davis?)
  • Defensive miscues
  • lack of Franz involvement after incredible start

Basically I liked what our 4 best players (and Eli and Chaundee for the most part) showed and beyond that, everything was messy haha

Also… it’s a 7-point game at halftime. Michigan had a bad stretch but this is still basketball. Michigan wasn’t going to win by 40 and Ball State is not an Oakland-style team that can’t hang on the court.

Deep breaths.

No one seems concerned with Brooks lack of contribution today and frankly on Sunday

Thought Eli looked fine after a sloppy start. Had some great defensive plays, a nice PNR drive. Just missed his threes and then was on the bench with 2 fouls.

Brooks has been fine today. We played awful when he left the court

I love doubling the post. Wish we’d do it more. College bigs generally suck at passing out of it.

that bar is low
