Geez….good for him. That’s a guy I’ve forgotten about. Interesting to think about the difference between our portal PGs since Beilein left (Smith, Jones, Llewelyn, Tre, EC) compared to our HS recruit PGs in that same era (Frankie, Dug, Pippen, PhatPhat, Zeb).

There are some good players in that list.
Smith was good. Jones a bit disappointing, I don’t think he was ready for the pressure of Big10 basketball. Llewelyn was a bust even before his injury.
Tre and EC obviously terrific.
Frankie and Dug? Both good players but evidently head cases.
Pippen we are going to see again.
PhatPhat looks like an okay MAC player.
Zeb eventually was okay at a mid-major level.

I wasn’t necessarily making a sweeping point, but generally speaking we’ve been able to produce very good B10 starters from the portal. Llewelyn was the only outlier and that was in part because I don’t think Juwan actually planned for him to be the full-time starter at PG coming off injury. I think he expected Frankie and Llewelyn to both play with JL being more of a combo.
The recruits aren’t necessarily “bad” or anything, but not one proved to be a quality starter on a HM team….and certainly not a winning team. Frankie kept transferring until his role diminished and topped out at….decent for a mid-level team? Dug was a head case. Pippen is now back in the B10 so we’ll see - definitely potential but not proven yet. PhatPhat was always a project and he’s settled in at a lower level but not a B10 starter.
Big game last night / this morning (?) from Will T down under as his team won again (they had lost several in a row). His girlfriend Greta also got into her first game off the bench.

Must be fun to just go out and have a green light to ball for Will. I was listening to an interview with Zack Novak earlier this year where he said it was really fun to play in Europe because you aren’t expected to be a role player and can just shoot anytime you want, reminded him on high school.
