Part of it I think is that while obviously the name was novel when Rose hit the national spotlight, the name SOUNDED totally unremarkable, right? I know the truth of the matter but I’m honestly sort of shocked that he was the first.

At the time, Penny (and I guess his parents) got a ton of sort of low-key racist cr*p (“hur hur what did she spell Anthony phonetically”) for his name, so not shocked it didn’t catch on (we still see a decent number of “Shaq’s” right?)

Interesting that Stoudamire was rated so high there but didn’t make the McDonald’s AA game.

Also, I’m curious about Bubba Wilson. I have never heard of him.

Travis Best almost joined the fab 5 class at Michigan. From what I’ve heard, Juwan, Jalen Jimmy and Chris, worked on the big dog (Glen Robinson) at the McDonalds game to join them as well. Imagine that.

I still have (somewhere) the Gibbons rankings of the top 100 players of that year. If I find it, I will post it.
