BYU alum and active church member here. Born in Ann Arbor to a Michigan family and so a lifelong Michigan fan. I like to see BYU do well, but don’t follow super closely and it doesn’t ruin my day when they lose like it does with Michigan. Obviously lots of friends and family who do follow closely.
I’m pretty sure church/school policy is that the head coach of any sports team needs to be an active member of the church in good standing, but assistant coaches are frequently not members.
This clarifies it a little. Apparently it is not church/school policy written in stone, but has been the practice and will almost certainly be for a more high profile sport like men’s basketball.
He doesn’t really seem to have Goodman’s flaws. His opinions on basketball don’t line up, he’s interested in things that I don’t get the sense Goodman is, he’s more like a witty fan than a journalist. I think it would be hard to act that way if he was Goodman.
