How do you feel about a 2-big lineup against Purdue? I have enjoyed some of the Tarris Reed looks with Hunter but feels like if we put the both out there against Purdue that Edey will guard Reed and just camp in the paint. Furst or someone else will match on Hunter provided he is outside and popping
I hope heâs freebasing Wagner vs Haas clips all week
Honestly? Why not? Heâs at 40% on 25 shots. Thatâs not a lot of sample size but it also isnât a % boosted by one outlier game. He went 3-for-5 against Maryland but the rest of his are built on just a couple shots per game. I think given the importance of Edey having to guard him and the struggles Hunter is likely to have with posting upâŚwhy not?
MeanwhileâŚwho else is going to shoot threes that you trust? Baker obviously but he has trouble getting them off. Kobe is scuffling at 29% and before someone points out how much his first couple of games dragged that down, heâs at 22% the past 8 games and is about to move up the scouting report if Jett is out. Dug is at 33% and Iâm fine with him taking some in the flow of the offenseâŚbut thatâs it.
My point was just that thatâs largely what the Purdue game comes down to.
If he goes 4-7, Michigan probably has a great chance. 1-5 not so much.
Do you think we have a chance if he goes just 1-2? I thought your question was more about whether he should take them. I think he should and I think we should want him and expect him taking 5+ threes. If he only takes a couple that probably doesnât mean he did so because he dominated on the interior.
No, question was how you feel about him making them because heâs going to have to take them.
Thatâs the entire key to the matchup for UM. Same as it was last year.
I think it is something they can work in a bit. The key is including both guys in the ball screen action (last year they ran a bunch of horns twist stuff with Moussa and Hunter) which puts the 4 and 5 for Purdue in uncomfortable positions.
What does everyone think of Tarris Reed going at Edney. Tarris moves a lot better and could face up and operate also. I think it would be worth a try at least a couple of times.
He will get his shift. Biggest potential benefit is Tarrisâ ability to draw fouls. Obviously it doesnât really lead to points because of the poor stroke but Edey is terrific at not fouling and it is a potential way to get him off the floor.
Hereâs the kicker for me:
Q: How many points were scored in last yearâs Purdue home game by players who will be playing in this yearâs game not named Hunter Dickinson?
A: Zero
That certainly says something about something.
Mostly that this is a brand new team
DJ was awesome in that game though. Watching the clip back from the recap of some of his PNR plays really reminds me how good he was, and how far Dug still has to grow.
I always liked Painter from this journey clip for going to find Mo after the last game he would play against him and just flat out say âYouâre a great playerâ and nothing else after he tormented his big lineup for years.
I find it amazing that Zach Edey is a literal giant playing in the B10 with the way the conference is played and refereed and has somehow found a way to avoid fouling. Of all the centers in the league over the years and of all the giants who have played at Purdue - how is he so good at that? Just seems highly improbable.
I would love for the young Purdue guards to struggle on the road and turn this into a matchup of centers and role playersâŚbut I think Michiganâs porous defense will let them get so many good looks that they will do okay.
Not fouling is a skill. Heâs in his third year and has improved each year at not fouling. Heâs also a giant as you say which means that him staying vertical is an incredibly effective defensive approach. Thereâs no need for him to foul.
The 2017 OT Michigan-Purdue B1G Tourney game remains one of my favorites of all time. So many good Purdue-Michigan games
that should 1000% be a flagrant on Virginia tech whether it was part of a celebration or not lol. Thats insane
Haha, Duke lost to a Virginia Tech team coming off of seven straight losses.
