16 and 13 last year, best player on a memorable Natty runner up, stole Coach K’s soul, and one of the first prominent faces of the 4-year NIL guy. Only UNC name that will make the list.
Seriously if Fred VanVleet is one of the top 25 players in the last decade that has to be due to what he has done in Toronto. Overall he put up 4 years of decent stats at WSU but nothing remarkable imo. Tyler Haws put up better numbers against arguably equal competition.
UNC won a national title in 2017 and had a much better team than the one last year (they won the ACC regular season and were a one seed In the NCAA tourney). If you’re putting a UNC player top 25, shouldn’t it be the 2017 team’s best player (Justin Jackson) who averaged 18, 5 and 3, won ACC POY and was a first team All American on the way to a national championship?
Bacot just feels like major recency bias
As soon as I saw Bacot on it, I knew I wasn’t going to like their list.
I’d personally put Bacot over Jackson although it’s a bit of projection to what I think Bacot and UNC will do this year. I’m also over-valuing the “stole Coach K’s soul” portion of this way more than everyone else it feels like.
I will say we do have roughly 20 people who contribute to these lists every week all from independent CBB sites. The goal isn’t clickbaity bad takes, it’s just supposed to be fun offseason banter. Half the time the people who contribute to making the lists blast the final lists as much as people who see them on twitter
There might be recency bias but 31 double/doubles is pretty insane.
Just not sure I’d put Bacot as even a top 5 player for UNC over that time. I’d put Maye, Jackson, and Berry over him for this purpose. Then maybe even Marcus Paige and Brice Johnson. That feels like the Michigan equivalent of like Mo Wagner being rated as our best player of the past 10 years. You could probably draft 50 guys to put together a college team before anyone even thought about picking Armando Bacot. 2 spots away from Oladipo!
It is absolutely fun offseason banter though
Gonna test your Bacot hypothesis with a couple UNC fan friends. I can’t believe anybody would have Brice Johnson over him after the last year. I think he’s closer to 2 or 3 on the list of best UNC guys in that span than 6. But we’ll see maybe I’m 100% wrong
They might not agree but it just means they’re wrong
Paige and Johnson were my maybes. There’s no way he’d be top 2 I can’t imagine but I am curious what UNc fans would say
Ok small sample size cuz I only have 2 UNC fan friends but one has Bacot 2nd behind Jackson and one has Bacot 2nd behind Brice.
I think our miss was probably not including Jackson on the list somewhere, or in place of Bacot.
I guess I value double doubles very differently than those guys LOL as that seems to be the basis for friend A’s argument
Also Maye absolutely carried at least as large a role on offense as Bacot did. He took 25% of his teams shots his last 2 years.
But I will admit I’m likely underrating Bacot a bit. Just don’t think he’s a top 25 guy of the decade
Andre Drummond is the Pistons’ all time leader in double doubles. I think that proves the UNC fan’s point.
Bacot was 10th in KPoY last year. Not an infallible metric obviously but it’s not like he was some dominant defensive force either.
@buckets12 Bet you didn’t think people would be going so hard after you for ranking Napier 11th in the past decade. They are relentless!
Dauster calling the dogs on me and sadly I have time today to troll back
I get it though. 2 titles is a lot. But Napier genuinely stunk horrifically in the first tournament run and his teams were mediocre the rest of his career til the senior year. Also 11th on the list behind a bunch of NPOYs is not even a bad ranking
Yeah i had no idea people were so adamant about Napier until I saw the 20-25 tweet and a bunch of people were listing him in their predicted top 5. I was super confused cause I’ve never thought of Napier like that
Shabazz Napier? where do they want him?
Dickinson had 6 DDs in year 1 and 11 year 2. Real good progression but he’s not getting 31 DDs this year. I think it matters when your team makes the championship game.
I just don’t care about that as a stat. He does get lots of rebounds, and that’s the only thing he’s better at than Hunter. And that’s all that stat means.
Also I wasn’t making a case for Hunter to be in the top 25 players of the Decade so idk why that’s relevant.
Getting lots of rebounds and losing in the title game as an 8 seed isn’t enough to make you an all decade player if you never made an all American team
I love rebounds
