Colin Castleton enters transfer portal

Better option than Johns this year? My gut says it’s a wash

Castleton was objectively better/more impactful this season. Also he’d have been competing with Davis, not Johns, at Michigan.

Better/more impactful on a worse team. And if he wants to expand his fame to be in the NBA he will need to play some 4

Sure, but he was an all-conference level guy on an SEC tournament team. The massive gap in production between him and Johns more than outweighs and “quality of team” argument.

Also I strongly disagree about that. The NBA almost never plays anyone with his size/skillset at the 4. For him to go to the NBA he needs to become more of a stretch 5, not a 4.

That makes sense. I just think if he was in Michigan (and John’s was not) he might play a little 4 and develop the “stretch” portion of his game

I thought that was already one of his strengths - that he was a Bielein stretch 5, a big that could stretch the floor.

It was supposed to be, but he’s 0-8 from 3 on his career

Ooof. I’m pretty sure that’s not good if you can supposedly hit threes.

Speaking of Johns, since it seems like half of CBB transfers these days I was thinking of Michigan players that may transfer and Johns seems like a super likely guy given:

  1. He’s proven these last few games that he can be a productive player with a bigger role than he had most of the year

  2. Michigan’s incoming class makes it very possible that he is not going to get that role

  3. He’s a senior so it’s now or never.

Maybe I’m way off, I never have a great feel for these things.

Point #2 less likely. John’s was also a pretty impressive recruit, 4*, who now has three years of college experience. I think he starts next year

Mom has been long time UM fan. If he gets his degree after 3 then maybe he leaves. But I doubt it. He’s locked into that starting spot next year and is just starting to see how good he can be.

And they are winning.

And now that I think about it, he could well be a Captain next year.

BJJ is certainly making his mom very proud! and i believe that he will carry the momentum into next season. It is fun to watch him break out after the burden fell upon on his shoulder but the writing was on wall even before that.

On #3, Johns can come back to Michigan for a 5th year OR grad transfer somewhere else for the 2022-23 season. Everyone who was in college basketball this year gets an extra year of eligibility if they want it. That said, Johns could probably go overseas to play professionally if he wanted to move on and make some money. It will also be interesting to see if a guy like him can earn some NIL money, and how that compares to professional leagues overseas.

He’s a junior.

  1. Johns has proven he can be a productive player with a bigger role at Michigan. And he’s proving it at the best possible time. To me this makes a transfer far less likely, not more likely. He was always going to have many potential suitors.

  2. If Johns maintains this level of play, he’s going to play a big role next season. On and off the court with so much roster turnover (likely) coming.

  3. He’s got two years of eligibility left, but I doubt he’s planning on using both of them.

Between the 3, 4, and 5, you would have an average of 24 minutes each for Johns, Hunter, Diabate, Houstan and Terrance Williams. Some will obviously get more and some less, but you figure those guys will play and Michigan will be big across the frontline.

It’s a futile exercise to project transfers at this point. The situation Johns was in screamed transfer 2 weeks ago. Maybe that’s changed. Maybe not. It would certainly speak well to Juwan’s culture if he stayed.

We have 80 minutes at the 5 and 4. If Diabate gets 10 minutes at each spot that leaves 30 for Johns and Williams. Which likely leaves Williams with spot minutes again unless he can backup the 3 which doesn’t feel ideal.

Yes, he’ll be a senior during the 2021-22 season, and he can come back or transfer for the COVID 5th year for the 2022-23 season.

Bill Raftery and company referenced a potential NBA career last night and I agree. International is a given (he could go right now), but his ceiling is still NBA.

Sorry that reply was meant for a different message.
