I have never been so confused by voting results in my life. This is crazy.
Incredible that someone might spend hours digging through Big Ten stats to the point where picking another 5 people will be incredibly time intensive and stressful, but they end up putting Jordan Murphy in the top ten.
I think top ten voting probably had a huge impact. When you vote for ten people each for a 15 person list you are going to have some outliers. Those 11-15 place votes are good for evening out ties and sorting through things.
For example, a few people might see Murphy or Russell as top ten but if you voted down to 15 I bet theyād be left off several ballots.
I wouldnāt vote Stauskas in the top ten I donāt think, but I bet he would be on a lot of third teams.
Iām surprised this wasnāt the consensus top 10.
Burke
Kaminsky
Draymond
Valentine
Turner
Winston
Sullinger
Oladipo
Stauskas
Zeller
KBD/Edwards are sort of close in my mind? But it seems absurd to me that Swanigan, Russell, Murphy, Craft, Ferrell got votes over anyone from this group.
The top eight there are pretty straightforward. I think thereās a lot of pretty clear debate on the next two spots in the top ten. You can make a pretty compelling case for Happ, Carsen, etc.
Again, not voting 11-15 is going to cause more noise in those last few spots.
I think youāre forgetting ā¦ or perhaps dismissing ā¦ just how good Swanigan was as a sophomore. Consensus 1st Team All-America as a Sophomore. And for his 2 year career averaged 19.7ppg, 14.3rpgā¦shoot, for his career he averaged a double-double in B1G play.
He wasnāt dominant in games against Michigan, so that perhaps skews some opinions. But itās a stronger resume than Stauskas. IMO, both Swanigan and Stauskas are deserving of being in the B1G all-decade Top10.
Am I looking at the wrong stats? I see 14 PPG and 10 RPG for his career averages, still very very good. His freshman year in conference play he averaged 9.8 and 7.5ā¦not exactly jaw-dropping numbers. His sophomore year he was a monster, but so was Nik.

LOL, right!!!
Are those stats per 40?
I agree with that list.
How is Jordan Taylor not on your list?
As I look back at Taylorās stats and numbers he definitely should have made it somewhere. Back to back 1st team all big ten, and 6th in Kenpomās National POTY ranking his senior year. Definitely not a first teamer but feels like he should be in the top 15 for sure.
Given the criteria (only counting 2010) Iām not sure if I would have voted for Evan Turner. I am 100% sure about Burke, Green, Valentine, and Kaminsky on the first team. Turner is the wild card, heās clearly in that group for his career but theyāre literally talking about a 3 month window where he was excellent (including a certain half court shot that shall not be mentioned any further). I mean to be honest, Derrick Waltonās last 3 months of his senior year were probably as good as Turner so when you only count that portion Iām not sure what to do with it.
Recap heading into today:
3rd Team:
- Swanigan ā Purdue
- Craft ā OSU
- Russell ā OSU
- Johnson ā Purdue
- Ferrell ā IU
- Murphy - Minnesota
2nd Team:
- Edwards ā Purdue
- Winston ā Michigan State
- Sullinger ā OSU
- Happ ā Wisconsin
- Oladipo - IU
1st Team (heavily presumed):
- Burke ā Michigan
- Kaminsky ā Wisconsin
- Valentine ā Michigan State
- Green ā Michigan State
- ???
Player repped per team:
- Purdue: 3
- Michigan State: 3
- Ohio State: 3
- Wisconsin: 2
- IU: 2
- Michigan: 1
- Minnesota: 1
Assuming that the final first teamer is one of the following: Bates-Diop (OSU), Zeller (IU), Stauskas (Michigan), Turner (OSU)
Hereās a list of consensus AAās in that time frame in the conference. Seems like it should be the starting point.
1st team:
Swanigan
Valentine
Kaminsky
Russell
Burke
Oladipo
Green
Sullinger x2
Johnson
Turner
2nd team
Winston x2
Edwards
Happ
Bates-Diop
Bridges
Uthoff
Stauskas
Zeller
Taylor
That seems like it should be a pretty good general guide to who should have been considered here if you were only picking 10 people. Taylor definitely hasnāt gotten enough consideration from what Iāve seen. I guess you can add Yogi just cause he probably scored as many points as anyone in the decade.
Another person that may not be getting enough consideration from what Iāve seen: Miles Bridges. I know heās no ones favorite but as far as 2 and dones go he has a very good statistical resume. Heās let down by his teams NCAA tournament let downs.
His junior year he was absurdly good, but career numbers arenāt crazy. His Wisconsin teams finished 4th in the conference three years and 3rd once. Career numbers are 11 PPG and 3 APG on 40% shooting, I think heās in the realm of the 11-20th guys but not better than Stauskas/Zeller (who both had an outright conference championship)
I thought Turner before but Iām going to guess itās Zeller. I think Turner is going to get left out due to not really being part of the decade. Zeller was co Big Ten Freshman of the Year with Burke and had a dominant Sophomore year when Indiana won the BT reg season outright in one of the most competitive years I can remember. He was 3rd in Kenpomās national POTY that year (Burke was 2nd, Deshaun Thomas was 4th, Oladipo was 9th). The only reason he wasnāt a Big Ten POTY is because he had the misfortune of having to be the same year as Trey.
Those stats are very held down by his freshman year, with a coach notorious for being hard on freshman. He played in every game as a freshman(in a season that shouldnāt be considered based on the criteria) but only played 10 MPG and didnāt really get to do anything. Take that out and heās 14.4 PPG with 4.1 APG at Wisconsinās pace. But I do agree he should be behind Stauskas and Zeller.
I agree with @laddergoat that Zeller will get the last spot. Canāt imagine he was left off for Jordan Murphy on the team, since they played the same position. The BTN guy mentioned Turner and Garza as being guys the voters had a tough time with. And since it looks like Garza got left off for his half of a POY season, I canāt see Turner being all the way on first team.
But Oladipo was the best player on the team, not Zeller.
Overall, I do think if Happ and Murphy are there, then thereās a place for Zeller replacing one of the two of them.
